Goa, though the smallest state of India, is one of the paramount beach destinations. Famous for its azure blue beaches, magnificent forts, and Portuguese churches, Goa is situated along the western coast lapped by the Arabian Sea. Goa was under the rule of Portuguese for many years and it became a Union Territory along with Daman and Diu later to be known as formed as a state in 1987 with Panaji is its state capital. Goa, as a tourist destination, was brought into limelight during the hippy incursion in the 1970s. A Goa package may include a visit to the main beaches of Goa like Colva Beach, Candolim Beach, Anjuna Beach, Baga Beach, Bogmalo Beach and Calangute Beach. Beaches of Goa offer relaxed ambience, excellent seafood and water sports such as wind surfing, water skiing, sailing, water-scooters, and dolphin spotting cruises. The main sightseeing options around Goa are a few historical and religious monuments like the Se cathedral, Basilica de Bom Jesus, Sri Mangueshi temple, Church of St. Francis and Fort Aguada that can be included in your Goa package. Dating back to the 16th century, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is renowned of all the churches in Goa as it is here that the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier are kept in a silver casket. This Infant Jesus church is now a UNESCO World Site, which attracts Catholics from all over the world. Goa is the abode of some idyllic natural spots like the Arvalem Caves, Dudhsagar Waterfalls, Carambolim Lake, Mayem Lake, Netravalli Lake, Budbudyachi Tali and the Pomburpa Spring, which attracts tourists from far and wide. A unique attraction of Goa is its Turtle nestling places. The Morjim, Galgibag and Agonda beaches are the largest nesting grounds of the giant Olive Ridley turtle. Other places of tourist attraction in Goa are the wildlife sanctuaries like the Bhagvan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, Mollem National Park, Bondla Forest, Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary and Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, to name a few. Goa is the first choice to a lot of honeymooners and with its sandy beaches, serene atmosphere with coconut trees and green hilly forests, is probably the best from ant package you could choose. When in Goa do not forget to check out the mouth watering Goan cuisine. Fish is the main ingredient and lobsters, prawn and crabs are widely used. Avail a Goa package during Christmas and New Year to enjoy the authentic Goan festival and nightlong celebrations. In the summers the maximum temperature reaches up to 40 degree Celsius. The monsoon rain in the month of June to September provides respite from the hot weather. Dharamshala - the home of the Tibetan community in exile - is located in the valleys of the Dhauladhar range in the foothills of the Himalayas. Located in the Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala with its dense oak, pine and deodar forests, rivulets, cool mountain air, and numerous trekking options into the hills and valleys attractive surroundings and the nearby snowline, has everything for a perfect holiday. In 1959, when His Holiness Dalai Lama led his supporters from Tibet to India, the Indian Government decided to gift Dharamshala to him so that the numerous Tibetans could make this place their home. Dharamshala literally translates into 'spiritual sanctuary'. It is from here that the Tibetan Government in exile governs from. Dharamshala comprises of two areas - the lower Dharamshala at an altitude of 1380 m along with upper Dharamshala with the suburbs of Mcleodganj and Forsytheganj at an altitude of 1830 m. Mcleodganj, 13 km from Dharamshala, is famous all over the world as the religious centre of Tibetan Buddhism. Numerous Buddhist monasteries, prayer wheels and gompas adorn this mystical town along with the traditional Tibetan handicrafts, thangkas, carpets, garments and other knick knacks. The church of St. John in the wilderness is situated on the slopes of Mcleodganj and is the final resting place of numerous British officers including Lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of India during the 19th century. Other than the monasteries, numerous ancient temples like Jwalamukhi, Brijeshwari, Bhagsunath Temple and Chamunda can be found here. The important tourist destinations are Bhagsu Falls, Tsuglagkhang, Namgyal Monastery, Tsechokling Gompa and Norbulingka Institute. Another important attraction is the Triund hill amidst the Dhauladhar ranges. Triund, located about 9 km from Mcleodganj, can be reached after a 5 hour difficult trek and is very popular among the trekking enthusiasts. A few places one can visit when in Dharamshala are the Kangra Art museum at Kotwali bazar, War memorial, Kunal Pathri temple and plush tea gardens on the way to Kunal Pathri. The Kangra museum in Dharamshala gives an insight into the town's rich past with its display of various artefacts like miniature paintings, sculptures, pottery, coins, jewellery, royal attire and 5th century manuscripts. Dharamshala is well connected by road and air. The nearest airport is at Gaggal, 13 km away and can be approached by air from Delhi. Pathankot, the nearest broad gauge railway station is 85 km away. The Kangra toy train will take you till Kangra, 17 km away, and is worth a try for the scenic beauty. Taxis to Dharamshala are available from Delhi. HPTDC operates a regular luxury coach from Delhi to Dharamshala. Ooty, the heaven on earth, is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Nilgiri Hills or Blue Mountains, Ooty is a favourite hill station for all tourists. Known as the 'Queen of Hill Stations' by the British, Ooty was their summer retreat during colonial days. Ooty, the former capital of the Nilgiri district, offers serene atmosphere, blue misty weather and the green valleys. The official name of Ooty was Udhagamandalam. The British changed the name Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and later to Ooty. Lying at an elevation of 2286 m, the city of Ooty is a land of flowers and trees. A famous Kurinji flower, blue in colour, blossoms once in twelve years here. The Botanical Garden of Ooty, established in 1847, is a very important place to visit for the tourists as well as for the students. Ooty retains the colonial style bungalows, fire places and stonewalled churches. The aroma of spices and tea filled in the atmosphere. The mountain train journey from Kallar on a ratchet is very adventurous as well as enjoyable. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is one of the oldest railways in the country and it can find a place in the UNESCO World Heritage site. The train covers many curves, tunnels and sprawling tea gardens. The unending tea plantations in the city of Ooty are very attractive and the Nilgiri tea is very famous in the market. The erstwhile Wodeyar's land, Mysore is situated in the state of Karnataka. The city of Mysore is the second largest city in Karnataka with a rich history. Situated at a distance of 130 km from the capital city of Bangalore, Mysore was the capital of the Wodeyars during their dynasty. Mysore amazes its visitors by its stunning palaces, sprawling gardens, religious places, rich culture and heritage. The city of Mysore has maintained its old tradition of art, music, folklore, painting and literature even today. The main landmark of the city is the Chamundi Hill where the famous Chamundeswari Temple is situated. Ooty does not have an airport or railway station. The nearest airport to Ooty is Coimbatore. Cabs are easily available to reach Ooty at a rate of Rs. 2500/- for a trip. The nearest railhead is Mettupalayam. From there you can get the toy train to Ooty. Alternately, you can take a bus from Mysore to Ooty which is also comfortable. It takes almost 3 and half hours to reach Ooty from Mysore. Cabs charge Rs. 3300/- for 4 travellers. For more than 4 tourists, the cost increases to around Rs. 4300/-. If you have your own vehicle it takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes to cover 127 km from Mysore to Ooty depending upon the vehicle.(read entire article)(posted on: 2012-09-07)
