Road Route Only Option To Travel Darjeeling To Gangtok By: Rashmiranjan Patil
Located at an average elevation of 6710 ft in Mahabharat Range or Lesser Himalayas, Darjeeling is popularly known as 'Queen of Hills'. Snow-clad Himalayan ranges tower over this internationally acclaimed tourist destination.
Kanchenjunga, third highest peak in world with an altitude of 28968 ft., can be clearly visible from Tiger Hill here. Mount Everest can also be seen if the sky is clear. Among the tourist attractions in Darjeeling are Padmaja Naidu Himalaya Zoological Park, Lloyds Botanical Garden, tea plantations and the surrounding dense forests which are rich in flora and fauna.
Distance from Darjeeling to Gangtok is about 97 km. Gangtok is located at an altitude of 4740 ft in Shivalik Hills. Gangtok has several monasteries and stupas. The name Gangtok is derived from the Tibetan word for 'hillside'.
Among the popular sightseeing and pilgrim centres in Gangtok are Enchey Monastery, Rumtek Monastery, Tashiding Monastery, Labrang Monastery, Tasuk-la-khang (Palace Monastery), Pemayangtse Monastery, Nathu La Pass, Tsomgo Lake, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, Deer Park, Fambong La Wildlife Sanctuary, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary, Himalayan Zoological Park and Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden.
Kanchenjunga, world's third highest peak, is visible from the town. The peak can be seen from Enchey Monastery and Ganesh Tok. These places are situated at a higher altitude.
Neither Darjeeling nor Gangtok has an airport. Both the places also do not have main railheads. There is a mountain train, known as toy train, from Darjeeling to New Jalpaiguri. This railway line does not go to Gangtok. The rail services, however, remain suspended for quite some time now.
So the mode of transport from Darjeeling to Gangtok is limited to road. There is an all-weather national highway (NH 31A) between the two cities. Buses, taxis, Jeeps and Tata Sumos are available in plenty to travel from Darjeeling to Gangtok. Buses charge a rate ranging from Rs.2 to Rs.4 per kilometre depending on the type of vehicle. The travel time between the two cities by bus is about three hours.
Taxis are available in plenty to travel from Darjeeling to Gangtok. They charge a fare ranging from Rs.2000 to Rs.3500 depending on the type of car the travellers hire. The taxis are suitable for the group travellers, families with senior citizens and kids. The taxi cabs take less than three hours to travel from Darjeeling to Gangtok.
Shared taxi, Tata Sumo and Jeep are also available in this route. Since the traffic of passengers between the two cities is high, there is no need for the travellers to wait in the vehicle to fill in capacity and start the vehicle moving. There is also a fixed fare to travel from Darjeeling to Gangtok. The route to Gangtok from Darjeeling passes through Kalimpong, Pagona and Bacheykhoda.

Travelling From Bhopal To Mumbai By: Rashmiranjan Patil
Bhopal is the state capital of Madhya Pradesh and is located on the Malwa plateau. Bhopal is the second largest city in Madhya Pradesh and named after King Raja Bhoja. Bhopal is popularly known as the ‘city of lakes' because of the beautiful lakes in the city.
Mumbai is the state capital of Maharashtra. A port town and a bustling metro, Mumbai is also the commercial capital of India.
The distance between Mumbai and Bhopal is 823 km. Mumbai and Bhopal are well connected by means of road, rail and airways.
However, the best way to reach from Bhopal to Mumbai is by air. You can board a direct flight from the Raja Bhoja Airport in Bhopal and arrive at the Chathrapati Shivaji Airport in Mumbai in an hour and 30 minutes. Many airlines like Jetlite, Kingfisher and Air India have regular daily flights from Bhopal to Mumbai.
The NH 3 connects Bhopal to Mumbai. It takes a little more than 11 hours to cover the distance by road. The NH 3 is one of the major highways in India and it passes through a few major towns like Dewas, Indore, Nasik, finally terminating in Mumbai. The roads are well laid and smooth and if is taking your own car, there are numerous fuel stations and rest stop facilities with clean wash rooms all along the way.
One can also hire a taxi from Bhopal to Mumbai and back. It will cost around Rs. 20 to Rs. 34 per kilometre depending on the car. Taxi cabs charge Rs.16000 for Tata Indica and Rs.22500 for Tavera for the journey.
Buses are also available on the route from Bhopal to Mumbai. State transport buses take around 14 hours to cover this distance. Private operators are also available and seats can be booked from various portals online. Buses charge around Rs. 1000 onwards if AC. For ordinary buses the charge is around Rs. 500 inwards.
The best and convenient way of travelling from Bhopal to Mumbai is by train. Numerous express trains are available from Bhopal to Mumbai. The most convenient are the overnight trains that take around 13 to 15 hours to complete the journey.
Trains from Bhopal arrive at three stations in Mumbai, namely Mumbai CSTM, Lokmanyatilak and Dadar, and depart from Bhopal at either Bhopal Jn or Habibganj.
Tulsi Express (11070), Lokmanyatilak Howrah AC Superfast (12172), Bareilly Express (14314), Pushpak Express (12533), Lokmanyatilak Gorakhpur Super Express (12451), Kushinagar Express (11016), Firozepur Mumbai Punjab Mail (12138), Kamyani Express (11072), Mangala Lakshadweep Express (12618), and Udyog Nagri Express (12174) are some of the express trains that connect Mumbai and Bhopal. The average time taken for the train journey from Bhopal to Mumbai is about 14 hours.

Bangalore, the capital city of the south Indian city of Karnataka, is famous all over the world for its lush green natural beauty, as well as the numerous industries that have bloomed here. The modern city of Bangalore was founded by Kempe Gowda and it has witnessed unparalleled growth in the recent times in terms of infrastructure and industry. Bangalore is known for its educational institutions, IT parks, scientific research centres, as well as various other industries in the manufacturing sector. It is one of the fastest growing cities of the country. Bangalore enjoys great connectivity to major cities and towns of the country as well as all parts of the world.
Chikmagalur, on the other hand, owes its popularity solely to the growth of tourism industry there. A popular tourist destination of the current times, Chikmagalur enjoys a favourable status in the minds of the tourists travelling to south India. A location famous for its coffee, Chikmagalur is often called the ‘Coffee Land of Karnataka'. In fact, it is in Chikmagalur that the first ever coffee plantation of the country was undertaken.
The distance from Bangalore to Chikmagalur is around 255 km by road, and it takes around 5 hrs to cover this distance by car. Travelling from Bangalore to Chikmagalur is fairly easy as there are many buses that ply between the two places at regular intervals. These buses are operated both by the Government run KSRTC as well as private bus operators. They offer daily services and are a lot cheaper compared to some other modes of travel. This type of travel is recommended for lone travellers, back packers or travellers on a shoestring budget.
As Chikmagalur do not have a railways station of its own, rail travel is not possible to reach from Bangalore to Chikmagalur. If one wishes to travel by train, then one has to board train till Hassan or Kadur and then proceed to Chikmagalur by means of bus or taxi from there.
Chikmagalur do not have any airports as well. Hence air travel is not an option. At the same time, since both the places are situated closely near to each other, hiring a cab or driving down to the destination is a good choice. This mode of transport is preferable while travelling with family consisting of kids and elders. Though a bit costly, travelling by car saves a lot of time and is more convenient for the travellers. The cab charges vary according to the type of vehicle one prefers.

Amritsar (called Ambarsar in the colloquial language) is a city located in the north-western part of India. It is the holiest place for the followers of Sikh religion, because it is the abode of Harmandir Sahib (which is popularly called the "Golden Temple"), which is the spiritual and cultural headquarters of the Sikhs. It is said that the Golden Temple attracts more visitors than Taj Mahal. It is the most popular destination for Non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India. Amritsar is also the quarters of the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, and the Sikh Parliament.
Chandigarh is a Union Territory of India that serves as the capital city of two states - Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is known for its well-planned architecture and has made its own mark as an urban city. The city got its name from the two words Chandi and Garh which literally means Fort of Chandi. The name refers to an ancient temple devoted to Goddess Chandi, which was located in the area adjoining the city at ancient times. Nicknamed as the City Beautiful, the master plan of the city was formulated by the French architect Le Corbuiser. The architecture and well-planned design gives the city a unique look.
The distance from Amritsar to Chandigarh is approximately 240 km by road. The time taken for a drive from Amritsar to Chandigarh takes a little more than 4 hours by car. The main towns that fall in the way are Amritsar - 43 km -> Rayya - 50 km -> Jalandhar - 43 km -> Banga - 61 km -> Rupnagar - 20 km -> Kharar - 17 km -> Chandigarh. There are many petrol pumps, eateries, restaurants and rest rooms for the benefit of travellers.
There are not many trains connecting Amritsar to Chandigarh. The only train that connect both the cities is the daily train, Asr Cdg Duronto Express (12242). As such it is prudent to do advance online reservation through the Indian Railways Tourism and Catering Corporation (IRCTC) website. In fact advance reservation of tickets will mean that the journey is comfortable and without much hassles.
Apart from these, the easiest and quickest means of travel from Amritsar to Chandigarh is by air. The number of flights connecting both the places is rather limited. Currently, only Air India and Jet Airways operate flights to Chandigarh from Amritsar. Even so, there are only a few direct flights between the places.
Alternatively, reaching from Amritsar to Chandigarh by cab is also an excellent option. The taxi fares ranges between INR 5000 and INR 7500 depending upon the type of vehicle preferred. Travelling by car is preferable while travelling with family consisting of elders, small children or invalids.
