You Might Have Diabetes Or Pre Diabetes If You Say These Things About Yourself    By: Doherty Martin
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body is unable to use glucose (sugar) for fuel. When the blood glucose level is high for prolonged periods of time, it can result in damage to your body organs. Damaged organs can lead to more serious health problems and even death; therefore, it is important to identify diabetes early to prevent or delay these complications from occurring. Nontheless, many people allow this damaging affect to occur because of a lack of knowledge about this disease. Being aware of the risk factors associated diabetes is key to avoiding the disease altogether. Family history, members of certain ethnic groups (African American, Indian, Latino, and Asian), history of gestational diabetes, overweight issues, and a sedentary lifestyle all contribute to these risk. By the time most people decide to visit a doctor, they have already been feeling the symptoms of diabetes and don't even realize it. These symptoms are brushed off quite often without a second thought as many of them are preceived to be normal, perhaps temporary conditions suffered by people everyday. The one thing that is common among patients are the statements they give to the doctor about their conditions. Below are the most common things that a person will give about simple annoyances that eventually demands a doctor's visit: * I work outside so I thought I was just thirsty because I was hot. * I noticed that every time I eat a dessert I feel very thirsty afterward. * I drink a lot of water and juice so I figured that's why I was urinating so much. * I've been waking up 3 or 4 times a night to use the bathroom. * I have been so tired that I don't have the energy to play with my children or grandchildren. * I am always hungry and eating a lot, but I'm still losing weight and don't understand why. * I've been having trouble seeing lately so I went and bought new glasses, but I still have trouble focusing sometime. * There is a sore on my ankle that just won't heal. It has been there for 3 weeks. * I keep getting yeast infections. I treat them but they keep coming back. The above comments are typical of what newly diagnosed diabetic patients express concern over. They cover the things most associated with diabetes to include sudden weight loss, unusual thirst, declining vision, and slow healing wounds. As you can see, the symptoms can easily be brushed off as being something of little concern, or accepted as a part of getting old. Futhermore, it is easy to see how you may not associate the symptoms with an illness. However, understanding and knowing the risk factors can stave off diabetes long before it can become a serious health issue. If you have multiple risk factors which includes a family history, you should have annual check-ups by a physician to test for diabetes. In general, it's best to monitor your health with annual doctor visits because some people may not experience any symptoms at all.(read entire article)(posted on: 2011-11-01)
