Introduction To The Transformers

Transformers are the electrical devices which are used to change the voltage of the power supplied to meet the demand of the electricity consumers. It uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to alter the current from one value to another, regardless of the fact, whether the voltage unit is smaller or higher.

The device is made up of a soft iron coil which is wound around the two other coils. All the three coils are separate from each other. The primary winding is the one to which alternating current is supplied. It is also known as primary coil while. With the help of the alternating current supplied to the primary winding, a changing magnetic field is produced around it at the time of alternating potential is supplied.

On the basis of voltage turns and winding turns, the transformers are categorized into Step-Up and Step-Down. The basic difference between the step-up and step-down occurs due to the different number of voltage and winding turns on the coils. Both types of the device can be used in the place of one another.

Step-Down Transformers

This type of transformers typically has fewer turns on the secondary voltage in comparison to the primary voltage. The device is used to step down the voltage turns on the secondary winding and converts the high voltage, low power current into the low voltage. They are used in both domestic and industrial applications. The best example of its application is the door bells. The bells require low voltage for the operational process while the supply is high. The step-down transformer as per its working reduces the voltage to continue the process of the bells. A step-down transformer is also used as the step-up when the working is reversed.

Step-Up Transformers

The step-up transformers are directly opposite to the step-down transformers in the way of the application as well as principle. This device has more turns on the secondary winding than on the primary winding. It is widely used in converting low voltage and high current power into the high voltage. Thus, the voltage supplied is now equally distributed by using the device. For instance, an X-ray machine needs more voltage to run, but the supply required is lower than the actual supply. The transformer is used to provide high voltage to run the machine. They are also used as the step-down transformers at the time of the crisis.
