THE TRUTH IS – DAVIDO VS WIZKID EQUALS SALES
Just when we thought we have seen the end of the davido versus wizkid ‘beefs’, the conundrum has popped up its head again. In an exclusive interview with Olisa Odibua’s “The Truth”, Davido has voiced out his opinion once again about the fracas ongoing between himself and superstar colleague, Ayo Balogun, also known as Wizkid.
When I think about the fight ongoing presently, I can viably cast my mind back to last year when I was having a chat with two very young ladies, Mistura and Busola, and both loved either Wizkid and disdained Davido or loved Davido and hated Wizkid. So the battle was set and every time we had the conversation about the two musicians, we never come to a conclusion because they both (stubbornly) think one is better than the other.
Looking back now, I can only say it is idealistic that Davido and Wizkid will be on each other’s neck a year after because they share a lot in common even if they sporadically try to ignore it. They are both young, sing almost alike, very successful, claim to be from the street (they should ask guys hawking ...
... satchet water to survive), have endured long controversial headlines, one has a child he initially denied while the other has slept with strange girls that might lead to having a baby soon, they both sing popular periphery songs, club hits with good beats and no content and they both have lot of female fan base.
So who gains from this hullabaloo? Both of them!
They both keep ranting about how the other is disrespecting on the social media and the need to put a stop to it but if the ‘beef’ is properly managed, they can both coast to millions of naira in their account as a result of the fight.
PR managers and strategists will tell you that there’s nothing like bad ‘PR’ because any form of advertisement at all is good for the image retention in the public eye and a good spin doctor can and will always get the best out of it for the brand.
So, what should Wizkid and Davido do?
They should get good PR managers that can help package a ‘good fight’, something clean and will keep fans on their toes for more. It was exactly what Ruggedman management wanted to do with Eedris Abdulkareem Kennis Music brand at the time but because Eedris’ image was bigger than that of Ruggedman, they shrugged him aside and the inevitable happened. Ruggedman did his song anyway, we all listened because he was having a good point and today Eedris’ career has seriously nosedived to a level that he remains a laughing stock in the comity of musicians. (Remember I said no PR is too bad that can’t be spun for media advantage)
Wizkid and Davido are at par with each other even though one got musical breakthrough before the other like I said earlier. But the blind side is if it’s left unattended to and left to fester like a bad sore, we might be having a repeat of what happened between Tupac Amaru Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. yeah, I know what you are thinking, this is not the USA. But don’t forget that Davido’s gang already had a running with a DJ in one of the clubs last year that left his bodyguard hospitalized for days.
If the fight between Wizkid and Davido is not well stage managed, because they are both young and have a long career in front of them, it might cause some kind of divide rather than diversity among fans and loyalists.
