Advocacy For Online Dental Education
Total Articles: 75
Advancements in technology have begun to break down walls between nations. When before there were difficulties with coordination among neighboring countries, these days there is almost no excuse for not being able to communicate with each other, especially when the topic of conversation is something important like oral health care. Health organizations and authorities around the world recognize that there is benefit in opening their health systems to outside censure. Sharing information about each nation’s oral health education and oral health care provision can only cause a positive effect to each nation’s health system because authorities will learn or recognize things that are good and things that may be improved.
There is a movement currently being undergone by some nations to improve their oral health education system by synching it as closely as possible to the education systems already accepted and established globally. This would involve matching a country’s educational levels with that which is already globally established and observed, in order to allow dental students the opportunity to seek education in a foreign country without the problem that units already taken will not be credited. Part of this improvement is the advocacy for online dental education.
The benefits of online dental education for both the dental student and society cannot be understated. For dental students, undergoing their dental education through the internet provides them flexibility in their daily schedule and less expense for schooling. This is because students will only be required to go to the school when completely necessary, therefore allowing them to allot hours of their day for other things such as a part-time job and reducing expenses such as that for the commute to and from school. Also, since the learning materials will be available in the virtual and digital arena, there is less expense for school supplies. For society, one of the advantages is the reduction of the carbon footprint precisely because there will be fewer people on the road and there will be less need for use of resources such as air conditioning, electricity, water, etc that an institution will need to operate on. Dental institutions have thus begun to support the movement of teaching students through online instruction.
Online dental education made available to dental students of every nation pushes down more barriers between countries. Ideas, preferences, observed treatment methods, etc will not only be taught to particular students from one dental school in a particular country but may be learned by a dental student in a different country within the comforts of his or her own home environment. Through this method of learning, there is also the possibility of shared knowledge among and between authorities on oral health from different parts of the world, which is advantageous for dental students because the information they may receive is not constricted to one teacher. Ultimately, this benefits dental students because they can learn from various experts in the field and take what they learn to better their practice of oral health care. With these recognized benefits in mind, oral health organizations and institutions from different nations are working to improve their dental teaching websites and advocate their use as part of the global oral health education system.
