The first thing you need to focus on are your calf muscles. These play a critical role in your ability to leap. Just before you leave the ground, it is your calf muscles that give you that last minute lift. To build your calf muscles up, there are several things you can do to make them stronger than ever. Natural exercise should always be a part of the process but there is more you can do. An excellent strength builder to try with your calves are to do calf raises which work very well when done regularly. If you really want to build your calf muscles, a full range of motion must be used as you do the workout. Many people that do sports can actually become injured, or underperform, by simply being too tight. When you decide to exercise and build your muscles, your tendons and ligaments, especially in your legs, need to be stretched. You need to stretch specific muscles, especially when you are trying to improve your jumping ability. Always loosen, limber and stretch your quadriceps, calves, hip flexor muscles, Achilles tendons and lastly the hamstring muscles. It is also important to stretch your knees. You do this by initiating slow circular motions to get them limbered up. You will see a dramatic improvement in your ability to jump when your ligaments and tendons are comfortably stretched.

A terrific way to build your rebounding ability and also work on your fast twitch muscle response is to do box jumping. These are very simple to do and all you need is some type of box or something to jump off from and then back on.

It will be more difficult when you use a box of a greater height. Initially, this exercise should not be too hard to do. You should be able to jump on the box without too much trouble. All you will do is jump off the box and as soon as you land on the floor or ground you immediately jump on to the box. Stretching your legs, and warming up, prior to this exercise, is something you should always do anytime you work out. Your goal is to dramatically boost your vertical leap but rarely is it just about how high you can jump. The energy that you use running and jumping has to be coordinated into a vertical leap that can boost you toward the hoop. Once you are able to coordinate your thoughts and emotions into one dramatic leap upwards, you will know how to do vertical leaps.

It is obvious that most of these tips can help you to become a better basketball player, even so, in case you really want to take your game one step further you need to focus on your vertical jump skill.
