Total Articles: 6
Screws, also called fasteners, are made up metal such as steel, brass, nickel, bronze and copper, in a cylindrical shape and with a helical thread wrapped around it. These are also defined as a mechanism which converts rotational motion into the linear motion. Screws are commonly used to fasten or tighten two objects together and position them accordingly. Nails are also used for the same purpose, but the difference is that screws can be easily removed by rotating it in the reverse direction. Moreover, screws provide high holding power and strength than nails. Screw shaped tools made up of wood became common in the first century and used in wine presses, pressing clothes and olive oil presses. Metal screws and nuts come into existence in the fifteenth century.
Some screws are made to apply with complementary thread called nuts and others are designed to make its space into a softer material as it is inserted. A screw always have a formed head which allows it to be driven with the help of a tool i.e. screwdriver. A sharp conical end makes it possible to get deeper in the softer material. The head of the screw is usually larger than the body of the screw to provide a bearing surface, so that it would become convenient to be driven deeper than the length of screw. The majority of the screws designed to driven in a clockwise direction and also termed as right hand thread. Screws with the left hand thread are exceptional. Screws are of different types according to their use in the construction field. It also depends on the material to be held with them. It is very important to use good quality screws in any type of construction work. The qualities that should be assured before buying or using screws are:
(i)Tensile Strength: The maximum capability of the material used in manufacturing of screws to stretch under heavy load without breaking up or fracturing. It must have high tensile strength to provide support to the material it is attached with.
(ii)Yield Stress: The pressure that can be tolerated by the material without losing its elasticity property which could result in permanent stretch.
(iii)Corrosion Resistant: The screw should be made with corrosion resistant material or a fine coating of nickel, zinc or copper must be added ensure its durability under different conditions.
(iv)Water Resistant: Water can also damage the strength of screws resulting in change, in their size and shape.
There are varieties of screws and tools exist to insert the screw with material to be fixed. The general hand tool used for this purpose is called screw driver. For general home purposes, wood screws are used. On the other hand, sheet metal screws and machine screws are used according to their application. Some of the screw types are listed below.
