Understanding Heart Attacks
A heart attack medically known as Myocardial Infarction occurs when a portion of the heart muscle cannot get enough oxygen because one or more coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, suddenly get blocked. The rupture of a plaque is what typically causes the blockage. The area of heart muscle starts to die slowly if blood flow is not rapidly restored, either by a medication that dissolves the blockage, or a catheter inserted inside the artery that actually opens the obstruction.
