What Are Cohesive Gel Breast Implants?    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
A prosthetic known as cohesive gel breast implants, only available in the United States through special clinical trials, seems to be developing a successful reputation elsewhere. This product has garnered 15 years of use abroad, with favorable opinions from surgeons in Europe. These implants have undergone years of testing in America, but some may rightly wonder what the delay in widespread availability is.(read entire article)

A More Youthful Look With Cosmoderm & Cosmoplast    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
Collagen is one of the basic building blocks of the body. It is a structural protein consisting of long-chain molecules that clump together to form stretchy fibers; these fibers comprise the body’s natural filler material (the extracellular matrix) that holds our organs and other tissues in place. Collagen is also the main component in the body’s connective and protective tissues, including the fascia, ligaments, cartilage and skin. It is collagen in our skin that gives it strength, elasticity and toughness; and its breakdown allows the wrinkles that go along with aging to appear.(read entire article)

Erase Your Scowl With A Brow Lift Or Forehead Lift    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
Many people between the ages of forty and sixty appear to have a permanent scowl – a brow furrowed and creased by wrinkles, hanging low across the eyes as if to close out the world. These people are classic candidates for the brow lift procedure, also known as the forehead lift. But not every forehead lift is created equal. Surgeons offer several forehead lift options, each targeted on a specific region of the brow.(read entire article)

Improve Your Profile With Chin Augmentation    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
In both classical and modern art, a strong, chiseled chin is considered an indispensable part of a truly beautiful face. Unfortunately, many people are born with a receding, short, or otherwise “weak” chin and as a result suffer damage to their self image. A short, round face, while charming on a child, is aesthetically difficult for the adult; most cultures hold an elongated face to be superior in terms of beauty, and, for the weak-chinned individual, it can become nearly impossible to find a flattering hairstyle, an attractive pair of glasses, or a hat that appears well-fitted.(read entire article)

Is Ear Pinning / Otoplasty Your Answer?    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
Jughead. Dumbo. Mr. Spock. For people with disproportionately large, uneven, protruding or unusually-shaped ears, these words do not bring to mind beloved fictional characters. They are instead badges of shame, weapon-words hurled by others to inflict pain. The ridicule those with unsightly ears face is often the source of serious psychological damage, and can have significant and lifelong effects.(read entire article)

Beautifully Young Eyes With Eyelid Surgery Or Blepharoplasty    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
Excess eyelid skin is a common problem for people as they get older. The blockage of ordinary vision that drooping eyelids cause can interfere with driving, reading, and other everyday activities; posing danger to the patient and to others. Their appearance can cause psychological damage as well. Fortunately, a treatment exists to remove excess eyelid skin and strengthen the connective tissue of the eyelids. It is called blepharoplasty, or, more simply, eyelid surgery.(read entire article)

Look Younger—even Without Surgery    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
Non-surgical facial rejuvenation describes any procedure performed on areas of the face for cosmetic reasons. It can include chemical peeling, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing and “non-invasive” skin tightening procedures that don’t require surgery. These treatments are regularly performed to create an appearance that the patient might find more youthful, more healthful or simply more desirable. Many patients purchase these noninvasive treatments as part of a “regimen” that involves repeat clinic visits. Facial rejuvenation often becomes the simple, inexpensive beginning of a personal “total body makeover” program that later includes more elaborate surgeries. Nearly four million facial rejuvenation treatments were performed in America during 2008. Drug and grocery stores also regularly sell over-the-counter treatments that are advertised to be as efficient as the work of specialists. Chemical peeling enlists the use of chemical solutions – usually highly diluted acids – that gently peel away outermost layers of facial skin. The layer of skin which then surfaces usually looks more fresh and often less wrinkled to varying degrees. This process can also be used to treat acne, and in more extreme versions that require more painful chemicals, the patient may be put under anesthesia. This was the most highly employed method of facial rejuvenation in 2008, with more than 590,000 chemical peels performed. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are more physically aggressive skin treatments that use abrasive particles or surfaces to polish away top facial layers of dead skin. The former term applies to a version of this process that is more severe and, again, is often done under anesthesia. Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is painless and is often a popular request in health spas. Laser skin resurfacing uses laser technology to dissolve the molecular bonds of wrinkles, scars, acne, sun damage or other undesirable marks on the facial surface. This procedure is considered a more aggressive form of facial rejuvenation, since it can target such marks in a powerful and more direct manner. The laser treatments can target a specific area and remove skin layer by layer without causing any damage to facial areas nearby. And laser technology is similarly used for non-invasive skin tightening, which allows a specialist to use a laser to send heat into the skin. This can cause enough tissue tightening to trigger the production of new collagen. This formation of collagen can give the skin a tighter, more firm look. Patients regularly request this painless and non-invasive technique to lift eyebrows, reduce wrinkles and to firm the cheeks and forehead. Overall, surgery performed in America solely for cosmetic reasons has increased nearly 50 percent since the beginning of this century, and facial rejuvenation is a large segment of this increase. The “body modification” industry, which once catered to a subculture, has fully entered the mainstream. Those who undergo such modifications usually claim feelings of attractiveness and increased self-esteem.(read entire article)

Plastic Surgery Channel    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
All of us are growing older – but none of us have to look old unless we want to. That’s the message behind a modern, technological treatment designed to repair skin damage due to aging. The treatment is known as facial rejuvenation. Facial rejuvenation is a therapy intended to reduce the sign of aging and revitalize the skin. Each facial rejuvenation treatment is uniquely tailored to the needs of the patient, and involves one or more procedures intended to reduce the signs associated with aging and recapture the tautness and healthy appearance of younger skin. Facial rejuvenation treatment isn’t just for women; although the majority of facial rejuvenation patients are women, men seeking to present their best appearance to the world are seeking out the treatments in increasing numbers. Facial rejuvenation is a term for a family of surgical and cosmetic procedures intended to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, darkened and/or discolored areas, and other age-related damage to the facial skin. Techniques involved may be invasive or non-invasive, and their effects can be short- or long-lived. A typical facial rejuvenation treatment involves some combination of these techniques: BOTOX® Cosmetic Chemical Peel CosmoDerm / CosmoPlast Dermabrasion Fat Injection Juvéderm Lip Augmentation Zyderm / Zyplast Facial rejuvenation is a common procedure, but no form of medical treatment is routine. Risks and possible side effects accompany every form of medical treatment, and facial rejuvenation is no exception. With this in mind, it is vital that those considering facial rejuvenation treatment first consult with their primary care physician, a board certified dermatologist, dermatological surgeon or plastic surgeon prior to making any decision regarding treatment of facial scars and blemishes. A fresher, more youthful appearance is possible for those whose faces are showing the effects of age. Facial rejuvenation treatment can help patients attain this appearance. By consulting a licensed medical practitioner, a prospective patient can get the information needed to decide whether or not facial rejuvenation treatment is appropriate.(read entire article)

Naturally Youthful With Fat Injections    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
smoothness and softness of the proverbial “baby’s behind,” is rare, however, and “Real Life” is to blame. Skin exposed to the hard-knock world quickly loses its baby-soft look and feel; the effects of aging, environmental impact and injury break down the supporting tissues beneath the skin and toughen its outer layers. As we age, this damage accumulates, and soon our faces are crisscrossed with fine creases and noticeable wrinkles. The plumpness of youth can be restored, however – through a type of treatment called fat injection. This non-surgical cosmetic procedure can help aging individuals minimize the lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful look to their faces. As its name implies, fat injection is centered upon fat – specifically, upon the patient’s own body fat cells. Prior to the procedure, fat cells are harvested from some other location within the patient’s body, and are then processed into a readily-injected form using a centrifuge. Once a sufficient amount of fat has been accumulated, it is transplanted into the face using a syringe. As the injected fat sinks into the skin, it begins to fill in gaps and valleys within the patient’s subcutaneous tissues, stretching the skin lawyer above it and restoring the face to a more youthful look and feel. Extra fat injections into the cheeks and lips may be performed if desired by the patient. The procedure takes from sixty to ninety minutes. While fat injections are effective, they are temporary. The patient’s body will begin absorbing the injected fat cells right away; within two to three months, the injected fat will have decreased in volume to the point where wrinkles and lines begin to appear again. At this time another treatment should be scheduled. Side effects associated with fat injection are few. Since the injected fat cells are harvested from the patient’s own body, the chance of tissue rejection and/or toxic shock resulting from the injection is essentially zero. Swelling, redness, itching and mild pain in the vicinity of the injections are commonly reported. Complications due to allergic reactions, materials sensitivities and so forth are also possible but are extremely rare. Fat injections can be an effective way to enhance the appearance of the face. As a means of minimizing the signs of aging that harm a person’s ability to project a more youthful appearance, few modes of treatment can boast the simplicity and safety of fat injection. As with all forms of medical treatment, however, potential patients should always discuss the pros and cons of the procedure with a physician prior to making a decision(read entire article)

Fountain Of Youth Or A Facelift?    Submitted as: Plastic surgery channel
While much good can be said of growing older, the prospect of physically aging leaves much to be desired. One of the harshest realities of the process of physical aging is the damage that time and life can cause to the face. As people age, their facial skin grows less elastic, and visible flaws become more and more prominent as the years pass. For those seeking to maintain their physical beauty into old age, rhytidectomy – a surgical operation better known as the facelift – becomes an ever more attractive option. A facelift is a cosmetic surgery operation intended to improve the firmness and smooth texture of the facial skin, thus reducing the appearance of the outward signs of aging. Although some surgeons require that the patient be sedated and under general anesthesia when a rhytidectomy is being performed on them, the typical facelift operation is performed under local anesthesia, which is the preferred option. During the procedure, the patient remains awake and aware in a relaxed and pain-free state. The procedure itself requires that the surgeon detach the skin of the patient’s face and neck, allowing the underlying tissue and muscle to be tightened; some liposuction of excess fat may also be required. The skin is then placed back upon the face and neck and stretched taut. Excess skin (often including that found upon the patient’s eyelids) is then cut away and removed, the skin is sutured into place, and bandages are applied to the wounds. Although the procedure is exacting and complex, it has a very long history and can be performed by a competent surgeon in only a few hours, often on an outpatient basis. Complications of a rhytidectomy can be severe. These may include Hematoma Infection Adverse reactions to anesthesia Damage to the facial nerves Necrosis of the skin Major bleeding However, dangerous complications are rare. The use of tobacco and certain medications (e.g. aspirin) are forbidden during the recovery period due to their promotion of increased bleeding. A facelift operation, while clinically routine, is nevertheless a major surgical procedure and carries with it certain serious risks, including the risk of premature death. Prior to making a decision regarding a facelift procedure, the prospective patient should consult with his or her physician as well as a board-certified plastic surgeon in order to examine whether or not a facelift is the best means of treatment in his or her particular case.(read entire article)
