There are many interesting stories enshrined in the history of Diwali. The rich Hindu mythology is full of anecdotes that contribute to the formation of Indian cultural and traditions. Diwali is one such festival of light that celebrates the victory of good over the evils.
According to Hindu mythology, in ancient times Lord Rama who took birth in Ayodhaya was sent to forest by his father king Dashrath as part of her wife’s ill will. As an obedient son, Rama left the kingdom, along with his wife Seeta and younger brother Laxman. It was during his exile that Ravana, king of Lanka abducted Seeta with all malicious intentions.
Lord Rama accompanied with his brother Laxman and a huge army of apes, brought down Ravana and his entire kingdom. It is this victory of good over evils that is celebrated as Diwali in India.
On this day of Diwali, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years. The whole of Ayodhya was enlightened with clay lamps. There were celebrations all over to commemorate Lord Ramas victory over Ravana. Since ages Diwali is being celebrated with same intentions of reinstating our belief in being a good human being and fight evil powers just like Rama did.
This tale of Lord Rama is called Ramayana and is full of lessons that are for ages being followed by Hindus. This is how it has been scribed in History of Deepavali.
Apart from the Ramayana, a few other mythologies are also associated with Diwali festival history.
On this day, Vaman Avtar too is remembered who in just three steps covered the entire kingdom i.e. earth, sky and universe of King Bali, thereby breaking his arrogance. This tale also teaches the mankind to be generous and kind with every individual.
Some people also celebrate Diwali in memory of Lord Krishna who lifted the entire Govardhan Mountain on his little finger to protect the villagers from heavy rains. Since then all the villagers of Gokul, started worshipping Govardhan mountain as its fertile land provided them food and shelter. This tale also preaches us to be thankful to the Mother Nature for its generosity.
Another story in history of Diwali is related to the Narakasur demon that, like Ravana, did a lot of injustice and trauma to the women. Lord Vishnu in his eight incarnation as Krishna defeated Narakasur on this day.
Diwali as festival of light is five day long celebration. The first day is known as Dhanteras or Dhanvantari Triodasi.
On the second day Naraka Chaturdas, People would take holly baths and offer prayers to God. Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasur on this day.
Third day is Amavasya, which is marked by the worshipping of Laxmi, goddess of wealth. On this day during the churning of ocean, goddess laxmi was incarnated.
Fourth day Goverdhan Pooja is performed where people offer prayers to Mother Nature just as villagers of Gokul did for Govardhan Mountain.
