Back-up-your-data-immediately!
Folks, this post isn't actually about Microsoft Excel, but about the larger family of Microsoft Office products. But it is one that, I think, should be read as widely as possible!
Google has just released a new product called Google Cloud Connect. And in a nutshell, here is what it does: it allows you to back up your data online in an unimaginably painless way.
Say for example you're sitting in the airport lounge at Portland, Oregon on a truly awful Monday morning. It's 3 a.m., your flight to New York is hopelessly delayed, and you are dreading the proverbial red eye, made worse by seemingly endless glitches.
On the bright side, you do have a hot cup of coffee in your hands, made just the way you like it by the friendly lady manning the Starbucks counter - and you are sipping it gratefully while working on the spreadsheet analysis that you need to present to your head honchos in New York later on today.
Until a person passing by accidentally jogs your arm, resulting in you spilling your coffee all over your notebook - which promptly shuts down, and refuses ...
... to come alive ever again.
Your spreadsheet, of course, had twenty different worksheets, innumerable data points, and analysis so complicated that doing it again would take days, not hours. You had saved it on your machine, but there is no back-up anywhere else.
There, have we depressed you enough?
Fret not, kind folks - this excel tutorial is about solving precisely these kind of crises. All that one (and by one, we mean you!) needs to do is head over to this link, and download and install the application.
Effectively, Google adds a small bar at the bottom of the layout of buttons on top, which lets you sync your files online, to your Google Docs account. Google Docs is a web application that comes free with every Google account - so if you have a Gmail address, you have a Google Docs account.
Google Cloud Connect effectively backs up a copy of the file you are working on to your Google Docs account every time you hit CTRL-S on your keyboard. In other words, every time you save the file on your computer (and so long as you are connected to the internet, of course), you save it online as well. And it can be accessed from any internet-enabled computer, anywhere in the world.
You're not going to welcome coffee spills on your notebook, of course - but hey, finishing that presentation in time for your meeting in New York will now not be completely impossible. In fact, it is all too possible!
And not just that - once you save the file online, you can choose to share it with anybody you like - even people with non-Gmail addresses. Once you save your file online, a new button pops up to the right of the Google Cloud Connect toolbar.
