2. Based on Mobility in Plant
a) Contact Fungicides
These stay on the surface on which they are applied and do not translocate into the plant. They provide a barrier against fungal spores. Many need to be reapplied on a regular basis and after each rainfall. Examples include Sulphur, Copper oxychloride, and Mancozeb.
b) Systemic Fungicides
Systemic fungicides are absorbed by the plant and moved throughout the vascular system of the plant. This internal action provides protection to new growth also. They are highly effective against internal fungal infections. Example: Carbendazim, Triazoles, Metalaxyl.
c) Translaminar Fungicides
These fungicides penetrate the leaf surface and form a protective layer within the leaf tissue. They provide longer-term protection compared with contact fungicides but are not highly mobile in the plant. Example: Dimethomorph, Azoxystrobin.
3. Based on Chemical Composition
a) Inorganic Fungicides
These include inorganic substances such as copper and sulphur-based compounds. They are also one of the oldest kinds of fungicides and are very much in use even today because of their efficiency. Examples include: Copper sulfate, Lime sulfur.
b) Organic Fungicides
Organic fungicides contain carbon and include synthetic and naturally derived compounds. They are generally more specific in their action and less phytotoxic than the inorganic types. Example: Carbendazim, Zineb, Captan.
c) Biological Fungicides (Biofungicides)
These biofungicides are of natural origin and are derived from bacteria, fungi, or plant extracts; they act by inhibiting fungal pathogens through their mechanisms of action. Example: Trichoderma species, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens.
