Every day, the world produces an astonishing amount of waste - impacting our environment, public health and the economy. But how much waste do we really generate daily and how much of it is properly managed?
In this blog, we dive into the latest global statistics, examine waste management practices and explore sustainable solutions for a cleaner future.

Global Waste Produced Per Day: The Alarming Numbers
According to the World Bank’s report “What a Waste 2.0”, the world generates approximately 2.24 billion tonnes of solid waste annually. That’s around: 6.1 million tonnes of waste every day.
To put that into perspective:
That’s the weight of over 18,000 fully loaded Boeing 747 airplanes.

Equivalent to the combined weight of nearly 25,000 blue whales!

And this number is projected to rise to 3.4 billion tonnes per year by 2050, if no action is taken - primarily due to urbanisation, population growth and economic development.

How Much of This Waste Is Properly Managed?
While waste generation is a global issue, waste management practices vary widely by country, income ...
... level and infrastructure. Here's how things currently stand:
Properly Managed Waste: Around 67%
Collected and treated through landfilling, incineration, recycling or composting.

High-income countries manage about 96% of their waste properly.

Many low and middle income countries struggle with limited infrastructure.

Unmanaged or Poorly Managed Waste: Around 33%
Dumped in open areas or burned unsafely.

Major environmental and health hazards - especially in developing regions.

Leads to soil and water pollution, toxic air emissions and public health crises.

Breakdown of Global Waste by Types
Understanding what we throw away is crucial to managing it better.

Waste Types Percentages
Organic Waste 44%
Plastics 17%
Paper & Cardboard 12%
Glass, Metal, Others 27%

Organic waste makes up the bulk, especially in low-income countries. However, plastic waste is the most persistent pollutant, with devastating impacts on oceans and wildlife.

Did You Know?
Over 90% of waste in low-income countries is mismanaged.

The average person in a high-income country produces more than 2 kg of waste per day.

Plastic waste takes up to 500 years to degrade in landfills.

The Takeaway
We are producing millions of tonnes of waste every single day and while much of it is managed, a significant portion still ends up polluting our planet. Effective waste management isn’t just a government responsibility - it’s something we all need to be part of.
