Addiction refers to engaging in an addictive behavior regardless of negative effects, such as difficulties in relationships, health problems, harm and negative consequences.

Is it possible for someone just to stop?

We rarely see the immediate consequences of our everyday actions until quite some time later. As a result, it is easy to ignore the decision to stop.

Ignoring the decision to stop can lead to a loss of control.

Among the signs of loss of control are:

Limiting your alcohol intake in advance – but not being able to stick with it.

Not knowing how much substances one has consumed.

The inability to stop no matter what the consequences are - perhaps a spouse is angry, you miss work the next day, or you fail to fulfill major responsibilities.

How does this loss of control happen?

Serotonin is a chemical messenger in the brain that helps boost your mood. In addition to natural serotonin release, an individual can trick the brain into releasing it by using a substance. As a result of repeated substance use, the brain becomes accustomed ...
... to serotonin from substance use, and it no longer produces it in the natural healthy way.

Taking steps towards recovery is therefore crucial. Through addiction recovery support and strategies, it is possible to re-train the brain to release the feel good chemicals serotonin and endorphins without consuming substances.
