Clarifying The Confusion Concerning Social Work Myths
While it is true that social work is a choice of life for people within a community, extending help to the ones in need of it, but for some, it is a profession that pays the bills. Here we are talking about the state-employed social workers who are assigned duties that involve striking lawful balance within the society and report any antisocial behavior to the respective authorities.
Social work can be philanthropic, something that people do on their own accord, irrespective of social status.
They can do it independently, by forming a group or be associated with an organization as well. However, the social worker assigned to government-designated employees comes with a lot more responsibility.
Sadly, the social workers often fail to get their due in the society due to some popular social work myths surrounding the job and we aim to break that with this write-up. It also creates confusion regarding the job role and prospects of the profession as a social worker.
Common Social Work Myths Debunked
Every profession has misconceptions, however, when it is something as social work that involves the interest and well-being of the general public, myths can become a problem. So here are a few debunked.
You have to be kind to be a social worker
Of course, your moral compass has to be pointing north to carry out social work duties, but kindness is not the only requirement of social workers. These are properly trained and skilled individuals of service to the public with a degree in social work. (bachelors going up to doctorate)
Social workers only work with the poor
There is no class or status distinction when it comes to social work. The ones involved in it work with all kinds of people irrespective of their gender, caste, color, class, and otherwise.
Social workers work with welfare organizations
It is rare for a social worker to work for a welfare organization. They work in different fields and might have clients who might be associated with welfare organizations.
Social workers take the kids away from their parents
This is probably one of the most negative social work myths that have been making rounds for ages, creating a negative impression in the minds of the people regarding social workers. In contrary to popular belief, social workers dedicate themselves to strengthen the values of the families who are going through some turmoil. They help to create a safe and nurturing atmosphere for the kids to grow up and might help the parents with the same. Only in dire cases where a child’s safety is at stake supported by evidence of neglect can a social worker suggest the state to take custody of the child.
Social workers are meddlers
Social workers do not under any circumstances meddle with the lives of people. They are skilled professionals who help people to resolve issues that have been affecting them and disrupting family life.
