Summer is best enjoyed in cool water. Swimming gives your skin the most refreshing sensation you could ever ask! However, the same cannot be said for your hair. Constantly swimming in chlorinated or salt water is not good for your hair. Studies have shown regular exposure to chlorine and salt can remove the natural oils from your wet and wavy hair and scalp. As a result, it changes your hair color, weakens the hair strands, and creates split ends.

This summer, rest assured about hair damage when you hit the waters!
You are protecting your hair while swimming is quite simple. All you have to do is learn these swimming hair care tips, and you are good to go!

First off, it is imperative to understand that hair care for swimmers is divided into two parts. The initial phase is a pre-swim hair care routine, and the latter is post-swim treatment. Both are of equal importance to protecting your hair while swimming.

Pre-swimming regimen

1. Rinse your hair
The easiest hair care tip for swimmers is to wash your hair before hitting the water thoroughly. By saturating the hair, the chances of substance build-up are reduced significantly.

2. Oil your hair
Oiling is an ideal treatment for your hair. It creates a defensive layer over your hair and keeps chlorine or salt from entering the roots. For this, you can use an array of easily available essential oils such as coconut and olive oil. When gently massaged on dry or damp hair, the oil will moisturize and protect your hair.

3. Apply leave-in conditioner
Applying a generous amount of leave in the conditioner, this is extremely useful. It nourishes and shields your hair from chlorine and other unsafe synthetic compounds in the water.

4. Just wear a swimming cap.
Simply folding your hair into the cap before hopping into the water will keep your hair dry and protected from harmful substances. This is the most effective way to prevent hair damage from chemicals in the pool.

Post- swimming regimen

1. Comb your hair
At any point in the post-swimming regimen, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair instead of a brush. This will prevent hair breakage and split ends.

2. Naturally, cleanse your hair.
For swimmers, it is important to treat your hair with a natural cleanse every once a week. This is a clarifying treatment to remove any residual chlorine, salt, or substance. To cleanse, you can use apple cider vinegar, vitamin C, baking soda, and tomato paste.

3. Wash your hair
You must not allow chlorine, salt, and any other substance to sit in your hair longer than necessary. Straightaway, wash your hair with shampoo, preferably a heavy-duty one to prevent further damage. Afterward, use a leave-in conditioner to nourish your hair.

Lastly, here are some more tips on hair care while swimming.

1. Style your hair into a bun or braid to prevent chlorine & salt absorption

2. Use hair products containing UV protection to reduce hair damage from the sun.

× Do not wash or apply products when wearing a cap.
× Do not tie your hair under the cap.
