Production of mucus which is also known as sputum is the hall mark of many respiratory problems. It is a hallmark symptom in many types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Excessive mucus production is the reaction of lungs to a constantly recurring irritant such as cigarette smoke or air pollution. Mucus or sputum is different than saliva and comprises of dead cells and debris from the lower respiratory tract. Mucus traps debris and organisms such as bacteria to avoid their accumulation in lungs. The main requirement is to cause expulsion of mucus with bacteria and accumulated debris and regularly cleansing excess of mucus from the lungs.
Differences in colour, amount, tenacity which implies thickness or stickiness of the mucus can indicate some or the other kind of underlying problem in your respiratory system. The basic reasons for excess mucus production include:
Overproduction of Mucus by Goblet Cells: Goblet cells are mucus glands and they can be found in epithelial lining of organs like respiratory tract. Hyper secretion of mucus from the goblet Cells and Sub Mucosal Glands: Sub mucosal glands secrete mucin and its hyper secretion adds to the accumulation of mucus in respiratory tract.
Decreased Ability to Remove Mucus: There is a decreased ability to remove mucus either due to damage to cilia in airways, which are hair-like structures that help in moving mucus from lower in lungs towards mouth or due to decreased ability to cough. Atrophy of muscles associated with coughing and expelling mucus can further lead to accumulation of mucus in lungs and respiratory tract. When there is inflammation inside respiratory tract along with build-up of mucus; it can cause unpleasant symptoms like wheezing, sleep difficulties, and a sore throat. Congestion is often accompanied by cough that brings phlegm up. But when problem arises in coughing or a person is not able to expel mucus despite coughing a lot. Some mucus in chest is normal. Having excess of mucus in chest occasionally may be tolerated. If a person regularly has an amount of chest congestion or other marked symptoms which indicate problem in respiration; it becomes a matter of concern. There are many health issues that cause mucus in chest to build-up. These include acid reflux, allergies, asthma, bacterial and viral infections, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, and other lung conditions. With chronic accumulation of mucus in lungs; the chances of recurrent infections also increase. Lung infections can be very severe. Symptoms generally experienced with accumulation of mucus in lungs include coughing with or without expectoration, difficulty in breathing, wheezing and symptoms particularly experienced by the suffering patient. Cough and breathlessness may compel one to snore and wake up multiple times at night during sleep. Severe infection can lead to coughing up of blood or blood stained mucus. Initially, some patients may perceive coughing as clearance of throat initially and later come to know that this is happening due to some underlying respiratory disease. Conventional medicines can work to suppress existing infection but they can rarely treat root cause and are generally unable prevent recurrence of accumulation of excess of mucus. Normal production of mucus is essential for proper functioning of lungs and respiratory airways. Therefore, the methods applied to regulate mucus production should not leave your lungs and respiratory tract completely dry. Here are some natural methods through which you can control and gradually lower the excess production of mucus in lungs and the other parts of respiratory tract:
Drink Warm and Healthy Fluids: Staying hydrated thins mucus and makes it easier to expel it buy coughing. Hot and healthy beverages like Immune Boosting Tea provide enough relief. Gargle With Salt Water: Gargle with a mixture of salt and warm water. This will help you to remove phlegm and mucus from the back of the throat and ease symptoms. You may repeat this many times in a day. Do not drink anything cold and avoid exposing yourself to cold temperatures immediately after doing gargles with a mixture of salt and warm water.
