5 Signs You're Dehydrated
Most people know that thirst is a sign of dehydration. However, there are many other signs, apart from thirst, that signal dehydration.
Dehydration means your body is losing more fluid than you are taking in. This can be caused due to exercise, an illness that causes diarrhea or vomiting, and loss of body heat.
Dehydration can cause serious issues, such as – driving while slightly dehydrated can lead to dangerous behaviors, like late braking. If you are more dehydrated, your athletic performance might be adversely affected.
When the weather is hot, you might remember to drink water, but when it is cooler, people often forget to drink water and hydrate.
But it is important that you stay hydrated even during cooler weather. A lack of enough fluids can reduce functioning in your cells, tissues, and organs.
There’s no pre-defined quantity of water for everyone. It depends on your diet and activity levels. Yet, there are signs that you might be dehydrated.
When you lose fluid, the nerve signals from the brain to your muscles don’t work properly which causes cramping.
Since exercising causes loss of fluids, it creates an imbalance of electrolytes, like sodium and potassium in your muscles. This is more likely to cause cramping, and the soreness post-workout.
Organs, such as the liver use water to function. Liver is also responsible for releasing glycogen, the sugar store.
When the liver doesn’t get fuel, it cannot release the energy stores and the body tries to replace it by eating. Sweet foods are especially attractive, so cravings for things like desserts or sugary drinks may indicate dehydration.
Water also regulates blood volume and hence, blood pressure. A lack of fluids reduces your blood pressure, causing dizziness and lightheadedness.
Dehydration also affects the vestibular system or the system that maintain balance. This may cause vertigo and nausea due to feeling off balance.
When your water intake reduces, the urine output does too. A dropping urine quantity and frequency is a big sign of dehydration.
That can prove dangerous because it means that the kidneys are unable to get rid of toxins as quickly as they should.
Not passing stool properly
Hydration helps the entire digestive system, including giving your poop enough moisture to pass out. Without enough water, your stools can harden and become difficult to be expelled.
What to do if you are dehydrated
Most of the time, dehydration symptoms are mild and they can be minimized by simply drinking more water.
However, if dehydration is severe, seek medical help right away.
