The basic knowledge in plastic moulding is inserting molten liquid plastic into a ready shaped mould, for example, the mould of a bottle. It will be then allowed to cool, then the mould will be removed to reveal the plastic bottle.

The Plastic Molding Processes:

Injection Moulding

In Injection Moulding, melted plastic is forced into a mould cavity. Once cooled, the mould can be removed. Injection moulding is used to mass produce toys, kitchen utensils, bottle caps, and cell phone stands to name a few.

Blow Molding

Film Insert Molding

This plastic moulding technique imbeds an image beneath the surface of a moulded part. A material like fabric or film is inserted into a mould. Plastic is then injected.

Gas Assist Molding

The gas injection moulding is in usage to create plastic parts with hollow interiors. Incomplete shot of plastic is then followed by high-pressure gas to fill the mould cavity with plastic.

Rotational Moulding

Hollow moulds packed with powdered plastic are secured to pipe-like spokes that extend from a central hub. The moulds rotate on separate axes at once. The hub swings the whole mould to a closed furnace room causing the powder to melt and stick to the insides of the tools. As the moulds turn gradually, the tools move into a cooling room. Here, squirted water causes the plastic to harden into a hollow part. In this type of plastic moulding, tooling costs are low and piece prices are high. The Cycle will take nearly 40-45 minutes.

Structural Foam Moulding

Structural foam moulding is a process of plastic moulding usually used for parts that require thicker walls than standard injection moulding. Implanting a small amount of nitrogen or chemical blow agent into the plastic material makes the walls thicker. Foaming happens as the molten plastic material enters the mould cavity. A reedy plastic skin forms and solidifies in the mould wall. This kind of plastic moulding can be used with any thermoplastic that can be injection moulded.

Thermoforming

In this plastic moulding method, sheets of pre-extruded rigid plastics are horizontally heated and drank down into hollow one-piece tools. When the hot plastic solidifies, its shape adapts to that of the mould.
