One cannot emphasise the importance of martial arts. And the reasons to learn it are multiple. One may take it up for getting into their best physical shape, for competitions or for self-defense. Martial arts and self-defense go hand in hand. It teaches you with the moves to protect oneself in the need of the hour from any attack or assailant.

Martial arts are diversified. Different regions of the world have their different martial art forms which have been true to the region.
It is to be noted that though these forms may look similar, it’s important to know that they are all different in more ways than one. In short, some martial arts are better in teaching you the moves for self-defense than others.

Karate is about staying fighting fit. English translation of ‘karate’ literally means ‘empty hand’. It uses kicks and knees from Karate, ground fighting from BJJ, and punches from boxing. It focuses on neutralising the opponent as quickly as possible. It involves reality-based training and one is trained to use both defensive and offensive moves together in self-defense.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ is a great martial art form which teaches to fight the opponent irrespective of the size, gender and built. It trains to fight the larger assailant using the leverage techniques. It is equally effective when practised by both males and females. This mixed martial art (MMA) form is excellent for self-defence and can be learnt by one and all.

Muay Thai

This famous combat sport is defined to be ruthless and aggressive. It puts emphasis on attacking or injuring the attacker such that it allows for some time to run away from the situation. Referred to as ‘the art of eight limbs’ as it includes eight points of contact viz. fists, knees, elbows and feet, Muay Thai teaches to use the body parts as weapons. It teaches to deliver bone-crushing powerful strikes which shall devastate the opponent. It is thus excellent for self-defense.


This martial art form teaches to take the opponent to the ground and immobilise them with a choke, pin or lock. It focuses on grappling technique and is great for self-defense.


This Korean martial art form comes handy in practical fights wherein the learner is trained to make his legs stronger so that he can neutralise the opponent quickly and defend self against the attack effectively.

It is important to note that during the emergency hour, one should use their inner strength to fight the opponent so that the moves are effective.
