This insurance reduces the worries of the insured but just buying the insurance is not enough. The insured needs to understand and be aware of all the factors involved such as inclusions, terms and conditions and what the claim process for travel insurance is and how does it work.

Before getting to the point and discussing the claim procedure, let’s take a look at what is covered and what is not in travel insurance.

What does travel insurance cover?

There are many insurance companies providing different types of travel plans and the coverage benefits differ for each plan. These are the commonly covered in travel insurance and these details may differ from plan to plan:

Emergency medical expenses
Emergency dental expenses
Loss of baggage or important documents
Delayed or missed flight. Flight cancellation expenses.

Emergency medical evacuation expenses

Trip cancellation expenses

Buying an insurance plan is not so difficult but understanding the claim procedure and knowing how to claim travel insurance and what is the right way to do it, to avoid the claim getting rejected, is also your responsibility.

Here’s a guide for you to help you understand how to make a travel insurance claim:

Carry the original travel insurance documents while going on any trip along with the photocopies of the documents.
In case of any travel related emergency, call or email your insurer or travel assistance provider and let them know about the claim. The phone number is always mentioned on the insurance documents.
Ask the insurer about the details and documents that need to be submitted to make a claim as the documents vary for each type of insurance claim.
Submit all the required documents to the insurer via fax, email or post.
After submitting the documents, insurer will check and verify all the documents to provide coverage against the policy.
It is up-to the insurer whether to accept or reject the claim.
It will take 15 working days (approx) for the final settlement of the claim process.

Travel Insurance Claim can be done in two ways:

Cashless Claim: In case of any medical emergency which traveling, the policyholder needs to present travel insurance documents to the medical service provider and the bills or medical expenses are directly settled by the insurance company with the medical provider.
Reimbursement Claim: In this case, the policyholder informs the insurer about the claim and submits the required documents. The insurance company then verifies and provides reimbursement when the policyholder comes back to India, if it was an international trip.

Documents Required:

Original boarding pass or flight ticket
Copy of the passport showing the travel dates
Original bills / vouchers
For medical claims – Bills and prescriptions, doctor’s consultation slip, original admission/discharge card
