Greece Holidays Allow You To Explore Fascinating Places
Greece has everything you need to have a memorable holiday. Located in the south-eastern part of Europe, this country is considered as the cradle of Western civilisation and has quite an intriguing history. For those who are not quite interested in history but would like to explore some beautiful beaches, there are some fascinating Aegean and Ionian islands that have plenty of them. Nature lovers would also have a wonderful time visiting the lush green forests, idyllic villages, volcanic peaks, and snow-clad mountains. There are many other attractions you can explore during your time spent in this charming European nation.
One of the most popular ones you'll get to explore during your Greece holidays is Acropolis, which is located in the heart of the capital city, Athens. This ancient site comprises three temples that date back to the 5th century BC. Among them, the Parthenon is the most well-known and distinctive temple. It originally had 58 columns supporting the roof. At the foot of this site are other ancient attractions, such as the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos, and the Roman Forum. Taking a stroll on the 2.5-kilometre Archaeological Promenade would also be one of the memorable experiences of your visit to Acropolis.
Another interesting place worth exploring is the Acropolis Museum, which is one of the most-visited attractions in the capital city of Athens. This museum has been built using steel and glass and has the appearance of an ultra-modern structure. It was designed by the famous Swiss architect, Bernard Tschumi, and has light and airy spaces that have been created specifically for housing the ancient finds from the site of Acropolis. Among the top attractions of this museum is Moschophoros, which is a statue dating back to the 6th century BC of a young man carrying a calf on his shoulders.
You'll find the island of Santorini the most gorgeous of all the Greek islands. The most renowned places on the island are the towns of Oia and Fira. Upon visiting these towns, you'll find scores of Cycladic cubic buildings and most of them have been painted in white. Many of these buildings have been converted into boutique hotels today with some excellent amenities like infinity pools. The black-sand beaches of the island and the crystal-clear waters touching them give you the perfect environs to enjoy sunbathing or swimming.
Don't miss visiting the monasteries of Meteora while holidaying in Greece. The Meteora is a rock formation located in central part of Greece and the Eastern Orthodox monasteries have been built on its summit. During the Ottoman rule, the monks who lived in caves took refuge on the Meteora to escape the lawlessness of the occupying Turkish forces. They were able to build the monasteries with the help of building materials that were transported by a few people using ladders. They also helped in bringing provisions for the monks in baskets. In recent times, these structures are accessible by roads and they enable tourists to visit them if they don't have enough time to explore the place on foot.
