In some way, you could say that we’ve used edge computing in the past – where systems entailed computing that was carried out physically close to the work being done, and data was collected, analyzed for the specific work or to modify the equipment or processes in use.

It was used in this way because it was a practical solution at the time. The Global Edge Computing Market that we have today comprises of technology that’s low-cost and is capable of high-speed data communications. And this was even before we had the kind ofubiquitous wireless technology we had earlier, but the difference now is that we can locate this new computing infrastructure miles away from the source where the data is supposed to be collected and works using cloud or data center system.

This new technology has even more advantages that make them economical, effective and definitely more secure than before, less expensive and easier to maintain.

But as seen in all engineering novels, there are a certain number of tradeoffs. For example, the technologies have the benefit “remote computing”, but here there is the trade-off of latency that depends largely on the network it’s been connected to. Sometimes, it could be the securitycost of or even lackof good connectivity, let alone a high-speed one.

So edge computing as we know it now, technologies and advantages included, mitigates these issues as we can move some of that computing infrastructure closer to the data source. And according to the definition we understand today, edge computing is remote computing as well.

Only now, the areas of the edge computing that has to operate on low latency, or high bandwidths are carried out locally – and this part is often referred to as the edge. All of the other subsets, especially those related to the data are placed on the “remote” infrastructure. There are numerous applications that benefit from using edge computing this way, ensuring stringent latency requirements that are necessary for things like augmented reality, virtual reality while making it possible for computers, storage and network resourcescloser to each other and bring about convenience via these features.

Strategic placement – as mentioned earlier, where all resources used in the EC network landscape are strategically placed; this could be either close to the users so that there aren’t any delays when offloading data, carrying out tasks from distant data centers.

Low costs in backhauling –EC can lower the cost of carrying user data to and from central clouds. Especially in AR/VR applications, where viewing or interacting in real-time using virtual objects require faster end-to-end delivery of service that make AR/VR possible like video rendering and image analytics.

Fewer bounded delays – here EC has the potential to deliver on the tightly bounded service in lightning speed response time, the fore making a geographically distributed communication system more distributed and heterogeneous all at once.

Better enabled scattering – when there are fewer delays, EC networks can have even morecentralized cloud resources spread across all corners of the mobile network edge and can be accessed easily via stronger 5G and Wi-Fi.
