Ashura is the day that has great importance in Islam because on this day, Allah saved the children of Israel from Pharaoh.

Different Muslims celebrate the day of Ashura in different ways for example, Muslims prefer to fast on this day and they make donations. When it comes to Shia Muslims, they used to mourn on this day in order to recall the sacrifices for Islam made by the prophets.

All the Muslims know that Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram and there is a big reward of fasting on this day. If you were first on the day of Ashura then it will expiate for the sins of the past years. It means that you must be thankful to Allah that he has provided you an opportunity to seek his forgiveness.

When Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him!) went to Mecca in 622 CE, he observed that Jews used to fast on the day of Ashura. When Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him!) asked them the reason for fasting on the day of Ashura, they answered, "This is a very special day because Allah saved the children of Israel from enemies in Egypt on this day. Hazrat Musa was so thankful to Allah for this that he used to fast. We are the followers of Hazrat Musa so we are also fasting on this day.”

Upon listening to this, Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him!) said, “We are even closer to Musa than you are”.

Prophet Muhammad on the day of Ashura and ordered other Muslims also to do so. In the next year, Allah Almighty ordered Muslims to do fasting only in the month of Ramadan. However, it was optional for the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura. It has also been found through different sources that Hazrat Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him!) used to fast on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram.

All the acts made my Holy Prophets are considered as-Sunnah. Hence, if you also fast on the day of Ashura then you will definitely earn a reward for it. Some Muslims fast for 3 days (9th, 10th and 11th Muharram), some fast for 2 days (9th and 10th) and some Muslims fast for a single day only that is on the 10th day of Muharram. Fasting in these days will be accepted by Allah Almighty as expiation for the sins committed in the previous year.

However, you should not rely on this single to seek forgiveness but you should commit not to commit the same sins against in the future. You should offer your prayers, stay away from lies and adultery, and even do not commit any sin in the future.

Another way to seek forgiveness from Allah is by performing the pilgrimage, for example, Hajj, and Umrah. The good news for you is that Cheapest Umrah Packages from the UK are available for Muslims. You must get information about such a package and take the start of such a spiritual journey.
