When it comes to pests, one of the most important things to know is whether or not a particular bug or critter is dangerous to humans. This helps determine the level of priority you give to their elimination.

While small pavement ants are little more than an annoying pest that you’d rather not have to live with, fire ants are well known for their painful bites and are a more serious threat. A swarm of fire ants can even kill a person, especially if that person is elderly or a child.

But there are so many other species of ants, how can you tell which ones are merely annoying and which are dangerous?

Today we’ll be taking a look at a species of ant known as the carpenter ant.

What Are Carpenter Ants?

Carpenter ants are a classification of ant known for their large size, and their tendency to colonize wooden structures. Their love of wood is what gives them the name carpenter ant.

Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not really eat wood, but merely hollow it out and build colonies in it. They tend to prefer old, dead, or damp wood so your brand new deck is most likely safe. The older section of your house with the rotting floorboards, however, may not be!

Carpenter ants are quite large, reaching sizes of up to 1 inch in length. This makes them one of the largest kinds of ant in the world.

They are located in many places all over the world, the most common variety is a species known simply as the black carpenter ant.

Can Carpenter Ants Harm Humans?

Although most carpenter ants would prefer to be left alone, they certainly can pose a danger to humans.

Their incredible size gives them the ability to inflict very painful bites, and in large numbers they can overwhelm a person and inflict serious injury.

Most adult humans should be able to knock the ants off and escape the situation before serious injuries are sustained; however children are particularly vulnerable to carpenter ant attacks.

As with many insects, carpenter ant bites are capable of giving humans a bacterial infection known as impetigo, which is highly contagious and mostly affects children.

While carpenter ants rarely cause serious harm to humans, it’s important to get them off your property as soon as possible, especially if you have children who might be exposed to the colony.

What Other Damage Can Carpenter Ants Inflict?

The more probably kind of harm caused by carpenter ants will not be to people, but to property.

Given the carpenter ants’ love of wood, it’s no surprise that they are capable of inflicting thousands of dollars worth of damage to wooden structures including decks, barns, garages, and even houses.

If you suspect that you have a carpenter ant colony anywhere of your property, do not hesitate to call a pest control sydney company to get rid of them as soon as possible. It could end up saving you lots of money in the long run.
