A sacred mountain located in the Hejazi region near the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia, Jabal al-Noor is revered by Muslims across the world for its significance in Islam. It is the mountain home to the 'Cave of Hira', where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had received his first revelation of the Holy Quran consisting of Surah Al-Alaq's first five ayats from the Archangel Jibreel (A.S). The mountain is also one of the popular attractions in the region and is visited by plenty of Muslims every year. About one to two hours of strenuous hike is needed for an individual to reach the Cave of Hira.

Many of the Umrah and Hajj pilgrims visit this mountain during their time spent in the holy city. The origins of the name of this mountain can be traced back to the event when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Since this had led to his enlightenment, the cave became known by this name which means 'Mountain of Light' or 'Mountain of Enlightenment'. The appearance of this mountain is something quite distinct from the other mountains in the region. Its summit makes it appear like two mountains placed on top of each other.

The summit of this mountain in the mountainous region is considered to be among the loneliest of places and even more isolated is the Cave of Hira. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to spend plenty of time inside this cave in deep contemplation. He and his companions had also visited the steep and slippery peak above the cave. People visiting the mountain could only look over the rocks in the surroundings during those times while standing in the courtyard. In recent times, the individuals who visit this sacred mountain can witness the rocks as well as buildings that are located far away.

Situated at a height of 890 feet, the Cave of Hira is visited by nearly 5,000 visitors during the season of Hajj. They make the climb up to the cave to witness the place where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had received his revelation of the Quran on the 'Night of Power'. Most of the pilgrims visit this cave for spiritual reasons although it is not considered as a place of worship. Many of the Muslims do not consider a visit to this cave as an integral part of their pilgrimage.

Before the revelation was made, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to have dreams that were extremely pleasant according to the Islamic traditions. These dreams indicated that the signs of him being the prophet were beginning to appear. The occurrence of such dreams went on for six months. He began to feel the need to spend some time in seclusion and contemplation, which led him to this rocky mountain. It is said that he also took provisions with him while going to the mountain and he would make sure that the poor who accompanied him were fed well.
