Automate Pagespeed Insights For Multiple Urls Using Google Sheets!

Calculating individual page-speed performance metrics can help you understand how efficiently your site works as a whole. Since Google uses the speed of a site as one of the signals for page ranking, it is important that this insight view be at the page level.

However, one of the pain points in website performance optimization is the lack of the ability to easily perform page-speed performance assessments. There are many great tools like PageSpeed Insights or the Lighthouse Chrome plug-in that can help you learn more about the performance of a single page, but these tools are not easily configured to help you gather information for multiple URLs and publish hundreds of reports.

When we found a way to gather the performance criteria sideways, we got a solution that worked. While this method solves first problem, the installation process is quite complicated and requires you to have access to a server.

Two months after publishing this method, Google released version 5 of the PageSpeed Insights API. The V5 now uses Lighthouse as the analysis engine and also includes field data provided by the Chrome User Experience Report. In short, this version of the API now easily provides all of the data provided in Chrome Lighthouse controls.

Introduction to Automated PageSpeed Insights Report:

With this tool, we can quickly identify key performance metrics for multiple URLs in just a few clicks. All you need is a copy of this Google Sheet, a free Google API key, and a list of URLs from which you want to retrieve data - but let's take a quick tour first.

How to use this tool?

The Google Sheet consists of the three following tabs:
• Settings
• Results
• Log

Settings:

On this tab, you'll be asked to provide a unique Google API key for the page to work.

Getting a Google API Key:

Visit the Google API Credentials page. Select API key from the Create credentials ’drop-down list’.

Now you should see a prompt giving you a unique API key:

Then, copy and paste this API key into the section on the “Settings” tab of the Automatic Page Speed Insights spreadsheet. Now that you have an API key, you are ready to use the tool.

Set the report schedule:

On the Settings tab, you can schedule the day and time for reports to run every week. This will be set to the local time set by your Google account. As you can see, this setting also reports that it will run for the next three hours. This is a workaround for the limitations set by both Google Apps Scripts and the Google PageSpeed API.
