Steam cleaning your upholstery can be one of the most effective methods of cleaning it. However, this method could also leave your furniture damaged if you do it incorrectly. So be sure to follow instructions carefully, especially the instructions provided with your cleaner choice. Do not attempt to clean a leather couch with a steam cleaner. Leather Couches are a completely different method. If you do not feel comfortable cleaning your own couch, remember there are people that you can pay for them to do it for you.

Things you will need:

Steam cleaner with attachments
Steam clean formula
Stain pre-treatment
Soft brush or towel

The first step is to remove any debris from the upholstery, this includes; hair, fur, dust and dirt.
Clean off larger debris with a hand broom and a dust pan, and vacuum up smaller debris.

If your upholstery has tough stains, pre-treat them using a steam cleaning stain pre-theater. Be sure to allow sufficient time for the pre-treatment to sit on the stains, usually about 15 to 20 minutes.

You will need to prepare your steam cleaner by following the instructions given with your steam cleaning machine. These instructions usually include filling up the water tank with hot water and steam cleaning formula. The given amounts should be listed on your instructions. Plug in your steam cleaning machine and grab the hand-held upholstery attachment from the base of the unit. Always be sure to read through the operating manual of your steam cleaning machine before operating.

This step will determine whether or not you will actually proceed with the cleaning. You now need to check the colorfastness of your couch by cleaning a small no noticeable area of your upholstery first. After cleaning it, turn off your machine and blot the area with a clean white cloth. If there is a lot of color that transferred to the cloth from your couch, do NOT proceed with the cleaning. If the color transfer was small, or non-existent you may proceed with the cleaning.

Clean the upholstery in sections, doing one section at a time. Use slow, even strokes that are slightly overlapped. Clean your cushions and pillows separate from your couch frame they can be placed on the floor on top of a sheet.

Leave it to air dry, open up some windows and place a fan nearby.
