Smart devices are connected to IoT platforms that allow users to monitor the performance parameters of such devices. Connected devices can be monitored so as to improve maintenance and performance. When pumps are connected to IoT platforms they are able to function more efficiently as they can provide predictive alerts as well as real-time alerts regarding operational thresholds. This prevents sudden equipment downtime. Such an IIoT Solution comprises of the following three components:

Data collection device
Monitoring/analysis software
Sensors, including cables and junction boxes

Sensors are a significant part of this solution. Sensors to detect Gas, chemical, temperature, pressure levels and more can prevent impeller damage and other types of wear and tear. They can also help detect the actual cause of damage. With various types of sensors for specific purposes, it is possible to make pumps perform longer than the expected duration. The complete monitoring process is done without any physical survey by sensors which saves important resources and time and also provides safety.

Types of IoT sensors:

1. Pressure sensors:

Pressure sensors sense pressure and convert it into electric signals. They are able to detect the level of pressure created by the level of liquid in a pump and then convey it to the platform.

2. Temperature sensors:

Increase in the internal temperature of the pump due to Dry running or low flow can be tracked by temperature sensors. This sensors examine the operational pattern and identify the cause of heating as well so as to alert stakeholders.

3. Water quality sensors:

This sensor is used to detect the water quality, chlorine residue, suspended solids, pH-level and Ion monitoring among other requirements. This is especially relevant if the pump is used to treat municipal water.

4. Chemical sensors:

Pumps used in the chemical industry often deal with a variety of corrosive chemicals. As a result, such pumps are highly prone to damage due to erosion and abrasive solids. Pump seals face are most commonly damaged by such chemicals. Usually, manual inspection is not enough to prevent such damage. Monitoring chemical levels through chemical sensors can be very useful in detecting and preventing damages.

5. Gas sensors:

Gas sensors are used to detect vapor pressure of a fluid and also presences of various gas like toxic or combustible gas in a pump. These sensors monitor pressure and temperature to avoid cavitation as well as bearing damage caused by dry running when the fluid has evaporated.

6. Smoke sensor:

This sensor is used to specify the leakage of poisonous gas from pumps and identifies the level of gas in the pump. This is extremely important primarily for the safety of workers so as to prevent and promote easy detection of leaking poisonous gases.

7. Infrared sensors:

IR sensors can detect the presence of physical objects in surroundings by emitting or detecting infrared radiation or heat emitted by an object. Such sensors can be used to detect data about physical task completions.

8. Level sensors:

Level sensors are used to measure the quality of liquid assets and the level of fuel that is being pumped. This sensor helps to avoid fraud situation and validate expectation.
