We use the term ‘interventional cardiology’ to refer to a more specialized brand of cardiology this meant for treating issues like peripheral and coronary artery diseases, cardiomyopathy, pericardial diseases, aortic and valvular conditions and congenital heart diseases using catheter-based treatments or surgeries.

Simpler faster way to cure such heart ailments are helping the Global Interventional Cardiology Market to grow.

The advantage that this has over the standard cardio-thoracic or cardio-pulmonary surgeries like mitral valve replacement, heart transplant, and coronary bypass surgery is that it’s minimally invasive. It can be applied to cases that have to resolve using these catheters; it works by inserting deflated balloons or similar floatation devices on a catheter at the radial or femoral artery and then allowing blood vessels to carry this micro contraption to the designated place inside the heart organ.

This system seems invasive but requires less effort in the opening, broadening up arteries defined as stenotic or narrow, and restricting blood flow. This particular treatment has a high success rate in angioplasty cases; it reaches those narrow, blocked arteries. Then the balloon inflates and opens up the artery and immediately after that, surgeons place tiny plastic or metal tubes called stents to keep that artery open.

It appears like a lot of work but, the entire process is done using this fluoroscopy imaging technique involving real-time moving videos stills and X-rays to ‘map’ this route.

Aside from speeding up to block artery treatments, the other benefit is a cosmetic one where the patients won’t have this huge scar down their chest. In fact there is no scar at all and the pain level, postoperative monitoring and recovery time is reduced too. This has all but replaced open-heart surgeries.

So this is why this IC market is now valued at USD 15.43 Bn by 2023. It includes but isn’t limited to guidewires, bare-metal stents, drug-eluting stents, catheters, and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and has a range of application like heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, and peripheral vascular disease.

It is also anticipated to reach a CAGR of 6.04% during the 2018-2023 period, owing to a rise in cardiovascular issues and the need for easier, less invasive ways to treat them.

Market insights in 2019
Based on the type of products being sold, it is the drug-eluting stents segment that has the highest revenue and they are technologically superior to bare-metal stents and is expected to register a 5.71% CAGR in the 2018-2023 forecast period.

Catheters are still the prime medium for IC, and this segment holds a 27% market share and will grow at a 7.02% CAGR in the same forecast period.

Finally, where the main market regions are concerned, 38% of the total revenue belongs to the North American region, followed by Asia-Pacific with 27% but even with a 6.94% CAGR, it will be the highest in the years to come. Most of the growth that is expected out of the APAC will come from China, Japan, and India owing to the number of diabetic and cardiovascular patients.

IC markets in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are still in a state of expansion with a CAGR of 6.54% and 6.29% respectively.
