Once one of you has popped the marriage question (and the other one said yes!), you officially graduate to the level of engagement ring shopping. While draining for some couples, shopping for a ring that captures your unique love story can add an extra spark to your relationship. The sooner you start, the more thought you put into the process and finding the right match before your wedding day. After all, if you intend to spend the rest of your life with someone, the ring tying you together should feel special for just as long.

Popping the question is one of the biggest milestones in a couple’s life.
Orchestrating a perfect proposal can also be daunting and nerve-wracking—even though you might have known your partner for ages. It takes thorough preparation and finding the right that will speak your relationship’s language.

These handy tips and trick will make shopping for wedding jewelry a piece of (future wedding) cake.

Do take the time to listen to your partner. Even before you set a shopping itinerary, ask what styles your partner likes and what rings might prompt rejection. If you don’t want to let the cat out of the bag, engage your partner’s friends and family to help you narrow down your choices. Most likely they will know your partner’s preferences.

Don’t forget that you’ll be just attached to the engagement ring as your partner. Remember to factor in your vision and jewelry style if you’re looking for a ring you with both like.

Do know your must-haves and good-to-haves. Now that you have a rough idea of the design you’re going for, set a budget. It might be flexible at first, especially if you’re not following the industry trends, but writing down on paper how much you’re willing to spend on a rock will help with your upcoming engagement and wedding expenses.

Ask yourself what really matters to you in a ring and what you could compromise on. Is it the band? The size of the diamond? The style? As you try on hundreds of diamond engagement rings, keep your must-haves front and centre. Once you realize what you can afford with your budget, you might need to cut back on some of the good-to-have features.

Do a thorough quality control. Check engagement ring diamonds against these four key criteria: cut, clarity, colour, and carat. There easy markers—commonly knows and the Four Cs. A diamond’s cut is its shape and make. Is the rock symmetrical? Does the shape allow for the best brilliance and light reflection? Don’t buy a diamond ring that lacks an official certification report specifying its Four Cs. While blemishes and inclusions that naturally occur in a diamond make it unique, clarity is really what drives value up. Ranging from yellow to colourless, diamonds have a varying ability to reflect light and shine. Lastly, carat is a measure of weight when it comes to diamonds. Diamonds of greater carat weight are priced higher. Research any other quality markers that might help you get the best value for your money, and ask jewelers a lot of questions. Was your diamond sourced ethically? Where was it sourced from?

Of course, there is no rule that diamonds are a must – despite being popular choices for engagement rings! If you would rather go with a different precious gemstone – or a few! – there are plenty of other choices out there which can tell a beautiful story too. Some future spouses may want their birthstone along with their partner’s birthstone represented. Or in the case of some blended families, all of the birthstones of the kids can be incorporated into a truly beautiful and timeless family tribute!

While the specs are important, don’t forget to listen to your gut if a specific engagement ring catches your eye. No certificate in the world will deny a ring is beautiful if you and your partner think so.

Don’t ignore the band. Or the metal colour. While a diamond—or diamonds—might be the centrepiece of a ring, the band is what holds it close to your partner’s finger. Often overlooked, bands can bring a diamond to life or completely undermine its value. When selecting a rock, pair it up with various wedding bands to find the right fit. Play with the metal colour, try rose gold, yellow gold, or platinum bands to find the shade that complements and brings out your natural skin complexion.

Don’t cheap out on insurance. No matter the size of your engagement ring budget, don’t cheap out on insurance. From theft to damage, an insurance will guard you against any potential risks making sure your ring remains as special as when you slipped it on your partner’s finger.

Finding an engagement ring that resonates with and your partner is a journey that can either deepen your bond or turn into just another chore. Put some of the love you give to your partner into wedding jewellery shopping to mare the start of a great new chapter in your lives.
