All work and no play is not good for anyone, especially students who spend long hours poring over massive books and cramming for exams. That’s probably why colleges all over the world have fun traditions of their own, which allow the students to take a much deserved and fun-filled break from work. International students who study in Canada, too get to experience the campus traditions that are unique to the country. Storm the wall at University of British Columbia

For more than four decades, a number of students at UBC, have taken part in an event that includes a series of on-campus races and ends with the scaling a 3.7-metre wall. The event known as Storm the Wall is held over a number of days in March, and concludes with a fun Party, featuring a beer garden and a food truck festival

The Grape Stomp at Brock University

This event has been billed as Brock University’s messiest tradition. Every year in the month of September, hundreds of students crush, throw and slide among piles of grapes. The annual event in 2018 had more than a 1,000 participants with prizes given for the best stompers and for best team spirit, and so on.

The Great Pumpkin Sacrifice at University of New Brunswick

The University of New Brunswick’s longest-running tradition begun in 1973. For this event house residents carve a giant pumpkin to resemble the Roman god, Janus. According university lore, the tradition is supposed to represent the “academic” harvest, and the pumpkin sacrifice is conducted to ensure academic success. The campus residents howl for two minutes at midnight for seven days before the event, which is held on Halloween day, October 31. On that day, the carved pumpkin is sacrificially dropped from the roof.

Painting Old Jeremiah at University of Guelph

For many students at the University of Guelph, painting the Jeremiah, antique British naval cannon is a longstanding campus tradition, which was started decades ago as an act against war. According to tradition, the cannon can only be painted during daylight.

Hockey on the Iron Rink at McGill University

McGill’s outdoor skating rink is open during the winter months. It is known as the Iron Rink and is available for students to play pick-up hockey games, the rink is a short walk from the place where the very first organized hockey game in the university’s history took place, involving primarily the McGill University’s students, in the first week of March in the year 1875. The world’s first hockey team, was started as the McGill Hockey Club, two years after the event
