The door supervisor license obtained after successful completion of the door supervisor training is of prime importance for anyone who wants to take up a job of guarding any of the licensed premises in the United Kingdom. By licensed premises, we refer to any premise that is accessible to the public with the provision of alcohol or any of the premises with a regulated entertainment. But the SIA (Security Industry Authority) door supervisor license is not essential for the ones who want to take up jobs involved in CCTV operations although the SIA issues a separate license for validating the candidates to work as a CCTV operator. But the door supervisor can be a helping hand in this field as well.

The basic requirements of the SIA course

Among the various security training courses provided by the SIA recognised training institutes, the door supervisor training has a few basic criteria. Those include:

• The candidate must be 18 years of age at the least or older

• The need to provide a valid identity proof

• A confirmation of the candidate’s criminal background check

• Successful qualification of the SIA approved door supervisor training course

Once you have fulfilled the above-mentioned criteria, you can go to the SIA website and file the application for your license. But it is only after you have successfully passed the courses of door supervision as recognised by the SIA. The course is broken down into multiple training modules followed by organised exams outlined to assess the skills of the candidate as per the standards of the private security industry.

The main focus of the door supervisor course

While there are numerous SIA recognised training providers that are dedicated to helping the candidates prepare before applying for the license, not all institutes can serve the purpose. This is mainly because of the expertise and skills needed to train the candidates for optimal preparation. One of the prime criteria towards choosing a security course training provider is to look into their contributions in the industry of private security – the services they have provided till date along with the base of their training providers to help the candidates learn the basics of the industry. The door supervisor training is basically designed to help the candidate learn the basic of the SIA fundamentals, the skills, and laws as relevant to working as a door supervisor, managing conflicts within the premises and resolving issues through negotiation or other means. During the course, the candidate is also expected to work on developing the skills of physical intervention as necessary to work in the industry.

How does it differ from security guard training?
The main difference that exists between these two SIA security courses is the fact that the door supervisor course prepares the candidates to work at both the licensed and unlicensed premises. But you can only work at the unlicensed premises with the security guard training license. This is not all. Candidates can work as both security guards as well as door supervisors with the SIA door supervisor license but they cannot work as a door supervisor with the security guard license. In short, the door supervisor course is better than the security guard training and offers a wider range of job opportunities for the candidates. If you have already attended the security guard training, applying for the door supervisor course can enhance your career path but if you have completed the door supervisor course, you need not apply for the guard training but can opt for the SIA CCTV courses or First Aid training to enhance yourself.

To work as a door supervisor, an SIA recognised license of close protection can serve the purpose and you do not have to separately apply for the door supervisor license in that case. But if you successfully obtain the door supervisor license from the SIA, there are a lot of options that automatically open up for you. Some of those include working as a security guard, a helping hand towards working in CCTV operations and the job roles of key holders at various places. Among the numerous training providers of SIA security training courses, you need to make the right choice and getting a career boost is just a matter of time.
