Al-Bara Ibn Malik Al-Ansari (RA) was the brother of Anas bin Malik (RA) and belonged to Banu Khazraj tribe. His physical appearance was unkempt as he was thin and wiry with so little flesh on his bones that it was painful to look at him. However, he was so brave man that he killed many opponents and in the thick of battle, he was an outstanding fighter against the infidels. Moreover, Omar (RA) once alerted his governors throughout the Islamic state that they should not appoint him as a leader of the army because it might be possible that he would kill all rivals even withdraw the state from opponents.

Though there are several brave stories of Al-Bara (RA), however the most incredible and famous event of his brave activity was shown by him after the demise of Prophet (SAW) when several tribes took to leave the true faith. However, only the people of Makkah, Madinah and Taif and scattered communities were committed and steadfast with Islam. Their devotion can be perceived by one stop travel umrah specials if you are interested.

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, the first caliph of Islam stood firm against this sightless and critical movement. He (RA) mobilized eleven armies of Muslims each under a separate commander and forwarded them to various parts of the Arab land. Their major purpose was not killing but to make the defectors return to the right path of guidance and to confront the leaders of the rebellion.

The toughest group of apostates and the greatest in number were the Banu Hanifah among whom Musaylamah the Pretender claimed of prophecy. Musaylamah mobilized forty thousand of the remarkable fighters among his people in which most of those were followed him for the sake of tribal loyalty. Even they testified that Musaylamah is an imposter and Muhammad (SAW) was a true and final Prophet but they just follow him as dearer to them for tribal loyalty.

Musaylamah sent the army against Muslims under the leadership of Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl while Abu Bakr forwarded another army against Musaylamah led by Khali Bin Waleed (RA). This army consisted of best of fighters from both the Ansaar and the Muhajireen. Bara ibn Malik (RA) and a group of the most courageous Muslims were in the front ranks of this army.

Both armies met in the territory of the Banu Hanifah at Yamamah in Najd and as the battle raised severer Al-Bara (RA) turned to his men and said, "O Ansar, let not anyone among us think of returning to Madinah because there is no Madinah for you after this day. There is only Allah and then Jannah (Paradise)

He (RA) and the Ansaar launched their attack against the infidels breaking their ranks until they were forced to withdraw. They pursued shelter in a garden which later became known in history as The Garden of Death because of the uncountable were killed by the hand of the Muslim army on that day. Garden is still visited by the people who land Arab land in order to perform Umrah through customized umrah package. The garden was fenced by tall parapets. Musaylamah along with thousands of his men took refuge and closed the gates behind them and refreshed themselves.

Having new defending and attacking place they began to rain down arrows on the Muslims.

The brave Bara (RA) went forward and said his companions "Put me on a shield and hurl me into the garden near the gate, so either I shall die a martyr or I shall open the gate for you."

The skinny and thin al-Bara (RA0 was soon sitting on a shield and a number of javelins raised the shield and he was thrown himself into the Garden of Death amongst the infidels of Musaylamah's army. He (RA) descended on them like a clap of thunder and sustained to fight them in front of the gate. Many were killed under his sword and he himself continued numerous wounds before he could open the gate.

Then the Muslim army entered the Garden of Death through the gates and soon killed numbers of opponents. Finally, Musaylamah was killed by the Muslim army. Thus, Al-Bara (RA) got martyrdom in this battle as he had a great urge to die on the way of Islam.
