What To Eat And What Not While Everest Trekking?
Trekking the Everest is a dream of every trekker, new or old, novice or experienced. But it takes a whole lot of planning and physical training to make it to the adventure. While everyone talks much about the physical fitness and training before and during the trek, diet often takes a back seat. But remember, your diet is the number one thing that will affect your levels of energy and fitness while you are on the trek. To a great extent, the right diet will also help you in keeping sickness away.

What to eat for the three basic meals while Everest Trekking?
‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day’, we all have heard it a number of times but it cannot be truer when you are undertaking Everest trekking! Remember to have a wholesome breakfast that is healthy and gives you energy for a complete day at trekking.
The most appropriate time for breakfast is between 7 A.M. to 8 A.M. when it is served hot at tea houses. Some of the food items commonly served are different variants of toasts and eggs, bread, pancakes and porridge. These breakfast items offer the required levels of protein and glucose that can fuel and replenish your body for a long day ahead.
Whatever you choose to eat, try and avoid Tea and Coffee for breakfast since the caffeine content will leave you dehydrated.
If you’ve thought that food at the Everest Base Camp Trek will be boring and monotonous, you cannot be more wrong! While the traditional Nepali food that consists of boiled rice, lentils, pickle, vegetables, and Nepali style meat is easily available at every tea house, you will also find different varieties of noodles, pasta, macaroni, pizza, sandwiches and spaghetti. However, the menu will be different for different tea houses and also it will vary with the altitude.
Your safest bet with lunch is to have the traditional Nepali food that will provide you with all the necessary nutrients. The lunch is usually served around noon to 1:00 P.M.
The time for dinner at the
Everest Base Camp trek Trek is usually around 7:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. when the trekkers return to their lodges or the place where they are staying. Different lodges have a different menu but the food items are necessarily the same as served in the lunch. The trekkers can either choose to have simple Nepali food that is light and easy to digest or go in for their choice of western food to treat themselves at the end of a long, hard and adventurous day.
What not to eat?
We all know it is easy to give in to the temptations of your taste buds but it can get serious when you are on the Everest Base Camp Trek! So make sure that you eat sensibly and not temptingly while on the trek.
It is a wise decision to avoid the following:
• Western food items on the menu such as noodles, pizza, and spring rolls since they have no nutritional value
• Alcohol, (a big no!!) since it is the number one cause of dehydration.
• Junk food
• Food with high levels of sugar content
• Products that are canned
While it is important to check your diet when on a trek, it is doubly important to keep yourself hydrated with enough drinking water. Ensure you drink clean and safe water every time. Purification tablets are highly recommended for the purpose.
