Is It Safe To Eat Coffee Beans? Benefits And Dangers
Coffee is an ancient drink that originated approximately about 2000 years ago. It is considered to be highly consumed beverages across the world. It is preferred because of its unique aroma and flavor. A coffee bean is termed as the seed of the coffee plant, which is processed to make coffee. The coffee bean is the pit inside the red or purple cherry. The coffee cherries mostly contain two stones along with their flat sides. These cherries also have a small percentage of peaberry, which is present only 10 and 15% of the time, is believed to provide more flavor than regular coffee beans. The coffee beans are composed of the endosperm, just like Brazil nuts and white rice. There are mainly four types of coffee beans, namely arabica, robusta, Liberia, and excels. The arabica coffee beans are highly manufactured in Brazil, while robusta beans are produced on a large scale in Vietnam produces. Arabica is highly preferred as it can be created and roasted quickly. Although robusta is gaining popularity because the proportion of caffeine is three times more than arabica and prevents insect and diseases.
COMPOSITION OF COFFEE BEANS
The coffee bean consists of carbohydrate, tannin, proteins, lipids, and polyphenols along with minerals such as potassium, sulphate, zinc, copper, strontium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, manganese, and others. The coffee beans are roasted, which changes the color, flavor, and odor and becomes ready to be consumed after brewing. In term of weight loss, oral administration of green coffee bean extract to the rats was found to reduce visceral fat and body weight. Coffee isn’t prepared from the coffee berry fruit but from the seed inside that is ground, roasted, and brewed to make a coffee drink. There are two types of coffee beans, the red and the green. Red beans are known to produce lighter coffees, whereas the green beans are less acidic and have a pleasant odor. The labor which handpicks the beans needs to be skilled enough to differentiate between the red and the green coffee beans. The hand-picked beans are then soaked or scoured to remove the fruit and then washed to eliminate any flesh present on it. The beans are later sundried until they contain only about 12% of the water in them. Beans are then sorted usually by the machines but also hand-sorted according to their color and size. The sorted beans are then polished or in some cases, may even be aged if they are going to be a part of the specialist blends of coffee. The aging process of beans can take a span time of up to eight years. The roasting process achieves the brown color of the coffee that is commercially available. The beans are roasted at 400F (204.4oC) which also increased the size of the coffee bean to almost its double size. The different methods used for roasting the beans in different countries gives the coffee its unique flavor. The roasted coffee is then ground within a few weeks only using various types of grounding methods. Turkish coffee grinds the coffee beans using a pestle and mortar. The coffee beans are then brewed that are available in multiple techniques too.

Coffee beans and coffee has had a rising awareness about the ill effects of consuming coffee, but, recent studies have come up with merits that are nutritional and healthy about coffee beans. The coffee beans possess anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, and anti-oxidative characteristics. Consumption of coffee helps to prevent fatty liver and constrains fat accumulation. Moreover, it is used to prevent cellulite appearance. Coffee beans contain about 9% by weight chorogenic acid (CGA). CGA has proven to be useful as a neuroprotectant and also been successful in reducing weight. Recent studies have proven that CGA can help in maintaining the level of insulin in the body that helps in reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Coffee beans, thus, prevents various acute and chronic toxic diseases. They have also proved their utility in reducing inflammation that is associated with a number of health concerns. The consumption of coffee can help reduce cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks. Coffee beans also help to prevent the irregularities in the heart rhythm. Consuming coffee can reduce the risk of skin cancer.
Besides this, the use of coffee beans can be extended to personal care, food, dietary supplements, and pharmaceuticals industry. They are widely used as slimming lotion/cream, shower gel, anti-cellulite cream, etc. These beans are considered as an easily absorbed caffeine source and are mixed with animal fat to be consumed directly to boost energy levels. Nowadays, the ongoing trend of munching coffee beans covered in chocolate is becoming popular to get a caffeine fix. Furthermore, coffee is used in the production of a wide array of baked goods and chocolates which has also stimulated the demand of the coffee beans.

The demand for coffee beans has increased gradually, which is triggered by a number of factors. The increase in consumption of coffee in developing and developed countries across various age groups has majorly influenced the coffee beans market. The presence of a number of manufacturers producing coffee along with the existence of a number of coffee shop chains in several have bolstered the demand for coffee beans. Many countries, such as Japan, India, and the Philippines, are the major contributors to the market’s growth. The health benefits associated with the consumption of coffee beans have driven the consumers to choose coffee over carbonated drinks. It also contains substantial amounts of cafestol and kahweol, which may lead to an increase in the amount of cholesterol in the body. The presence of enzymes in coffee berries leads to the bowel, which causes the laxative effect. Moreover, a high amount of coffee consumed can disturb the sleep time of an individual and cause insomnia. Its consumption also results in oversleeping and can lead to clogging adenosine.

According to an estimate, the world coffee exports have substantially risen from 9.71 million bags in May 2018 to 11.6 million bags in May 2019. Accordingly, the world coffee production for 2018/19 is forecasted to be 11.4 million bags higher than the previous year, which records to be 171.2 million. This represents that the consumption of coffee is high, which is leading to an increase in the demand for coffee beans. The concept of coffee is changing rapidly, and new innovations related to coffee are popping up every time. Nowadays, coffee is not just limited to liquid coffee but is widely used in a chocolate bar, popsicle or a lip balm and are also mixed with beer, soda or liqueur and also used in making sneakers. Even various coffee retail outlets are exploring better modes to recreate and re-use coffee and its beans to produce a better and innovative product. New trends of coffee are following up, which includes superfood coffee, nitro coffee, goth latte, egg coffee, and blue pea flower coffee. According to a report published by NCA on National Coffee Drinking Trends, approximately 59% of coffee consumed daily is categorized as gourmet.
