Urgent Protection For Homeless Children
There are many children who have been away from their cities, their homes, and their families since a very young age. For many reasons, children end up being ‘runaways’ for reasons that are horrid and heartbreaking. During their tender years, children are vulnerable and susceptible to their environment - one can hardly fathom the impact an environment has on a child’s development. Children who live on the streets, end up being left somewhere or get separated from their families, and often turn out to be in a worse situation than before. Without any support of a guardian and with nothing left to fend for themselves, children tend to live in some of the most unhealthy, unhygienic and unsafe surroundings. Follow are two of the main situations that they need to be protected from:
Prevent from Preventable Causes
Homeless children often fall into the habit of eating stale food; picking food from garbage cans, try to fill their tummies with whatever they find - without knowing the source. Children skip their meals and hardly drink any water - all these make for ideal, and unnecessary, conditions for diseases that can turn life-threatening if not treated on time. Children living on the streets often sleep without warm blankets, rarely have proper and/or fresh clothes on their backs, and seldom bathe in a timely manner. There are many diseases that rapidly form in the body due to lack of basic care, thus posing as a threat to children living under disadvantaged conditions.
Access to Basic Education
Street children are, unfortunately, trying to make ends meet or more bluntly, getting to their next meal. During the years when the sole focus of a young adult must be on receiving education, not-so-privileged children are ‘hanging out’ in hazardous, garbage-induced areas, where they are playing with plastic bottles and aluminium cans, among other dumped material. This pushes them further away from attending a school or any classes that help them learn or guide them in their educational journey.
Street children require repatriation and rehabilitation, along with a systemic change in their lifestyle - mentally, physically and emotionally - once they have been taken off the streets. One distinguished organisation that has been diligently doing this is Salaam Baalak Trust. The non profit organisation provides safe shelter, access to basic health-care and mindful inclusion, among other projects that are focused to help children who were formerly living without a roof on their heads or other basic amenities.
