Transforaminal Injections
A transforaminal injection is administered in the back, into the area between the spine and spinal cord.

The transforaminal injection is administered to relieve lower back, legs and feet pain that is caused due to sciatica, herniated discs or other back problems.

There are many nerves that run from the spinal cord out to the legs. When the nerve root of one of those nerves, closest to your spinal cord, gets irritated and/or inflamed (because of a damaged disc or other condition), it causes pain that can radiate from the spine to the legs and feet.

The transforaminal injection sends steroid medication directly into the area between the spine and spinal cord, where the nerve roots are. The steroid can help to relieve the inflammation and reduce the pain.

Lumbar Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection
The lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection is performed as an outpatient procedure. The injection procedure takes only a few minutes.

The lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection contains a mixture of a steroid medication and an anesthetic. The anesthetic provides immediate pain relief while the steroid medication works to reduce swelling and inflammation of irritated spinal nerves. This procedure is effective in relieving pain in the lower back that radiates from the back to the legs.

The Injection Procedure
During preparation for the lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection procedure, the patient lies face down. A cushion may be placed under the abdomen. This allows the spine to bend in a way that opens the spaces on the sides of the spine, also known as the foramina.

A local anesthetic is first administered to numb the skin and the tissue covering the spine. Once that has been done, the doctor carefully guides a needle into the foraminal space that surrounds the irritated nerve root.

A contrast solution is injected through the needle. The physician uses X-ray guidance or fluoroscopy to ensure the accurate placement of the tip of the needle.

Once the needle’s position is confirmed, the physician injects a steroid-anesthetic medication. The mixture bathes the irritated nerve roots and relieves inflammation and pain.

Once the lumbar transforaminal epidural steroid injection procedure is complete, the doctor will carefully remove the needle and bandage the insertion site. Significant relief may be felt after one injection itself. Some patients may be advised more than one injection, to feel the full benefit of the medication.

If you are suffering from chronic back and leg pain, consult a pain management specialist right away. After a physical exam, determining the severity and frequency of your pain and making an accurate diagnosis, your pain doctor will prescribe a customized treatment plan for your condition.
