We’ve known animation for a very long time. Right from enjoying animated characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc. to appreciating high-octane action sequences enhanced through high-quality visual effects today, animation has been an integral part of the entertainment industry since time immemorial. Animation fascinates us and keeps us hooked. It creates a comprehensive and convincing illusion of something, and then we believe in the unbelievable, because that it is entertaining, and fantasizing. Today, when we speak of animation, the first thing that naturally comes to our mind is 3D animation. But, the animation isn’t just about 3D animation. There are many other types of animation I will be explaining the concept of 3D animation through this blog. But, with that, I will also be acquainting you with the different types of animation to help augment your understanding of the concept of animation.
What is 3D Animation?
In simple words, 3D animation refers to animating objects appearing in a three-dimensional space. 3D animation involves a meticulous manipulation of 3D models or objects within 3D software for exporting picture sequences to help create an illusion of movement or animation. The 3D process is chronologically categorized into three major phases – modeling, layout, and animation, and finally rendering. The production process is a perfect blend of all of these 3 phases. Let us take a look at each of these steps.
Modeling: This is the first step that describes the process of generating 3D objects within a particular scene.
Layout and Animation: This phase describes the procedure for positioning and animating the objects within a particular scene.
Rendering: This is the final step. It involves describing the end result of the completed computer graphics.
What are the Different Types of Animation?
The animation is a concept that has come a long way! Technology has played an important role in the evolution of animation from simple hand drawn animated faces and movements to the advanced computerized sequences that we see today. So, the animation isn’t just 3D animation, but also about the other ones that have been instrumental in developing animation effects all through these years. So, let us get going!
1.Conventional Animation: The most fundamental and primitive form of animation, conventional animation is also referred to as traditional animation. Traditional animation, of course, is a long process, and involves a lot of physical work in creating those perfect sketches, regardless of how much ever small the movement is. So, for instance, even if the artist wants to showcase an eye movement, it will have a set of frames, and the artist will literally have to draw every stage of the movement. So, modern animators, to catch a glimpse of conventional animation, and appreciate the hard work of conventional animators, watch those old Disney movies! That will help you understand and admire the efforts taken by those old stalwarts.
2.Motion Graphics Animation: This is a completely different form of animation. It involves moving around graphical elements. Motion graphics enjoy a widespread application in film titles, advertisements, animated logos, and educational videos. Generally, motion graphics indulge the use of text pieces to create the required animated effect.
3. Stop Motion Animation: Stop motion animation is a gradual process. In fact, a slow one! It requires a lot of efforts, and patience in capturing the smallest of movements of a particular object or the body part. However, the real challenge is that of the sequence of movements and capturing them to maintain a natural consistency in the animation.
4.Vector-Based 2D Animation: This is quite similar to the conventional counterpart, except for the application of computer programs such as Flash to create animated effects. In this type of animation, animators need not create an individual drawing of each and every frame. The movement can be shown by moving only an object or a part of the body within the frame.
Animation demands the animator to be creative, but at the same time adept at the various technologies used in the animation industry. Pursuing a 3d animation courses offers the required technological exposure to budding animators and further helps them build the necessary competence to excel in the industry. TTA’s animation course after 12th is aimed at developing industry-relevant proficiency in animation, through the latest animation learning the infrastructure, and offering a supportive and encouraging learning environment for them to explore the dimensions of animation and enjoy learning it.
