The capital city and the most important urban centre in Thailand, Bangkok was a small trading post in the 15th century when the region was under the rule of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. From the mid-19th century onwards, it grew rapidly and became a city of great importance, exerting a significant influence on the country's economic and social structure. Despite the rapid growth of this city and the resulting modernisation, it still preserves its rich cultural heritage. This is the reason why you'll find the gleaming Buddhist temples co-existing with the skyscrapers in Bangkok.

Upon booking your flights to Bangkok well in advance, you can have a significant amount of savings to be utilised during your time spent in the city for exploring its popular offerings. One of the must-visit attractions in the Thai capital is the Grand Palace, which is the city's most well-known landmark. It was built in the late 18th century and was used as the residence of the Thai king, the administrative seat, and the Royal court for about 150 years. This palace continues to attract plenty of tourists with its fascinating architecture and other attractions in the palace complex. All the visitors to this palace are required to dress in a decent way, covering their arms and legs.

Yet another attraction worth visiting while in the Thai capital is Wat Arun, which is also called Wat Chaeng. This Buddhist temple is located on the Chao Phraya River's west bank and is one of the most beautiful temples in the city. The very design of this temple and its attractive location on the riverside are the major reasons why it has gained immense popularity among the locals and tourists. In order to reach this temple, you can take a river boat from the Saphan Taksin boat pier. It stops at Pier 8, from where you'll have to take a small shuttle boat to the temple.

Some unique shopping experiences await you at Damnoen Saduak, which is a renowned floating market outside the city in the Ratchaburi province. It takes about an hour and a half from the Thai capital to reach this market. It can be a great place to get fresh and delicious food, while you can have good interaction with the locals. You can also choose to take a day trip from Bangkok on a cruise, which would pick you up from your hotel and take you on a six-hour tour to the most fantastic floating markets.

Don't forget to visit Wat Pho or the 'Temple of the Reclining Buddha', which is located behind the Temple of Emerald Buddha. Wat Pho is one of the largest temple complexes in Bangkok and is well-known for its Buddha statue, which is in a reclining position and is 46 metres long. It can be reached with a ten-minute walk from the Grand Palace complex. A visit to this temple would give you the chance to experience the traditional Thai massage, as Wat Pho is also home to one of the leading massage schools in the country.
