Small blocks of plastics used in the tile levelling system are known as tile spacers. They are used to maintain harmony between two tiles and to have them in proper order. Tile spacers are generally made of hard plastic which are quality checked and certified by the authority. The most common type of spacers used are cross shape and T-shaped.

Cross-shaped tile spacers are used in for having a uniform pattern or commonly known as checkerboard pattern. T-shaped spacers are used in irregular or offset pattern. These spacers are used according to the size and thickness of the tiles which are to be used. The system of uniform tile levelling depends on the placement of the tiles at an equal gap which is measured and taken care by the tile spacers.

Tile spacers can be used in two ways according to one's perspective of viewing. Typical spacers are of cross-shaped and it depends on the viewing of the cross or to elaborate, which characteristic one is emphasizing to.

It has four corners.
It has four points which point out to four different directions.

The placing of tile spacers are categorised into two methods. They are differentiated on the basis of the perspective of vision and thought.

Four corner method
Projection method

The four corner method states that you need to lay down four tiles to form a square. Now set a tile spacers where the corners of these four tiles are converging. Then fit every corner of the tiles in the corner gently. In this method, the main and the basic problem lies that, after the grouting is down, one cannot take out the spacers for they have got fixed and has taken the free space in the grouting area.

The projection method states that according to projection perspective to fix one tile two spacers are needed to fix. Thus, to fix four tiles eight spacers are needed. The second method is somewhat counter-intuitive because not all tile spacers are needed.

In every aspect of plotting or laying down things in a proper array, spacers are or a levelling tool is required. For example, builders use spacers while building a deck to keep floorboards lined up in a unified form. But, when it comes to tile levelling, tile spacers are the most important of all the tools required for tile levelling system. The material with which they are generally composed of are made of hard quality checked plastic. They can be composed of ceramics, stone and wood also. One can buy tile spacers in leading hardware shops in the city or there are specialised shops those who deal with tile levelling system tools. Construction tools dealers often carry these spacers in a set. In recent days online vendors are also available with these spacers for various kinds.

Tile spacers are generally made of fixed shapes:-

1/8 inch
1/16 inch
3/16 inch
ΒΌ inch
3/8 inch

They are used according to the size and thickness of the tiles in use.
