Hemiplegia is a more common form of paralysis that is caused due to injury to the brain. It is mostly a lifelong paralysis and affects the patient’s movement on one side of their body. It can occur in different degrees to different patients and often occurs with other problems like anxiety and/or epilepsy. According to studies, every 1 in 1000 person is affected by it. Whilst hemiplegia has been untreatable in mainstream medicine, paralysis treatment in ayurveda has proven to be effective at different levels.
What is Hemiplegia?
Hemiplegia, as already mentioned, is a type of paralysis affecting only one side of the body. It is triggered when there is damage to a specific area of the brain. In addition to injury, it can also be caused by blood clots or tumours.
Some of the characteristics of this condition include the following problems with muscles on one side:
• Spasticity
• Stiffness
• Weakness
• Loss of control
It is widely referred simply as paralysis.
Hemiplegia in Ayurveda
The condition is referred to as Pakshaghat in Ayurvedic science. It is considered to be caused because of disruption in the vata dosha that is responsible for controlling the motor and sensory functions.
Treatment Concept
The best ayurvedic treatment for paralysis is based on the concept of returning the motor and sensory functions to the brain. The ideal treatment options focus on the following aspects:
• The natural antioxidants in Ayurvedic medication boosts the supply of oxygen to the brain and slows down or prevents cell death.
• A wide range of oil-based ayurvedic medicines are used for external massage to improve muscular strength. This includes medicines like dhanwantram tailam, maha masha taila, and ksheerabala taila, to name a few.
• Your Ayurveda specialist can perform external panchkarma therapies for improving the peripheral nervous system and circulation functions.
• Heat therapy can be used to retain muscle tone and minimise spasticity. Nadi sweda is a commonly used therapy for paralysis treatment in ayurveda.
• Internal medications can be used. Common examples include bala, dhanadanayanadi kashyam, and ashwanganda.
Over the centuries, panchkarma therapies like abhyanga, vasti, and navara kizhi have been proven to be effective in improving the condition of patients suffering from this type of paralysis. It is worth noticing that the results in this science are not immediate. Positive changes gradually begin to show up after several months.
How Hemiplegia Affects Patients?
The effects of hemiplegia, as already mentioned, are different for different individuals. In some patients the effects of weakness, lack of control, and spasticity can be quite clear. For example, they may not be able to use one hand or they may have a limp. On the other hand, it may be unnoticeable in another patient unless they try to engage in specific physical activity.
Internal Ayurvedic Treatment Options
Some of the more complex internal treatment options used in the best ayurvedic treatment for paralysis are as follows:
• Oral intake of thrikatakadi decoction that features a dozen herbs. It helps in the purification of the obstructed channels within the brain.
• Chandra kalka is an herbal paste that is given along with an herbal tea to help reduce hypertension and purify obstructed blood vessels.
• If the patient with hemiplegia also has high serum cholesterol, they may be given anupana or herbal teas.
• Seetharama are herbal pills, given along with other decoction to balance off the dosha and prevent fever.
So if you have anyone in your family or a friend suffering from hemiplegia, you should seek paralysis treatment in ayurveda for them. It provides effective long-term benefits and addresses various other associated conditions as well.
