Xperia 1 is more than just Sony's latest flagship phone. It is a catalyst for the company's transformation and is moving in a new direction - hopes to bring the Xperia brand back to the radar. This is the first Sony phone with a three-camera and the only mobile phone on the market that uses a 4K OLED HDR display. The 21:9 aspect ratio makes it ideal for multitasking and movie viewing, while eye tracking autofocus and camera functions such as Cinema Pro video recording and full manual control should be of interest to creators. But at a price of nearly $1,000, does Xperia 1 have a chance to oppose high-end Android competition? I have used it for about two weeks, so this is my idea.

Design

In addition to the aspect ratio, the Sony Xperia 1 is a high-quality, well-crafted phone that can be distinguished by a super-vibration motor or a seamless blend of its Gorilla Glass 6 surface and a solid metal frame. Its general shape is very traditional. Instead of our arched back on the Xperia XZ3, the back is now a sturdy glass with a range of cameras. In addition, the XZ3's curved display edge has been dropped to avoid interfering with the movie experience. The 3.5mm audio jack is still missing, but you will get stereo speakers.

A lot has happened on the right side of Xperia 1. In the middle is a fingerprint reader - one can do the job, but neither as fast nor reliable as the other phones we tested. Oddly enough, the power button is now independent and is not embedded in the fingerprint reader. The volume rocker is at the top and at the bottom you will find a rare beast: a dedicated 2-level camera shutter button. Personally, I don't always use it to take pictures, but it's a great camera app shortcut.

Display

The Sony Xperia 1 is the first and only mobile phone with a 4K OLED display. It measures 6.5 inches on the diagonal with a resolution of 1644x3840 pixels and a pixel count of 642 ppi / inch. Now, we won't discuss whether a person can distinguish this and 4D HD smartphone screens (maybe not). We hope you know that this screen looks beautiful, sometimes I think I am looking at a photo printed on a piece of paper. It is worth noting that in order to save battery, mobile phones can only present content in full 4K resolution if it makes sense.

Interface And Software

The Android 9 Pie is loaded on the Sony Xperia 1, and the user interface is very similar to what we saw on the Xperia model. In general, the software has the feeling of "inventory". Google's digital health features are available, and if you like Google's screen navigation gestures, then Google's screen navigation gestures are the same. The environment screen is Sony's always-on display feature that displays fast status information on the display in standby mode: time, alarm, pending notification.

Processor, Memory And Performance

Installing the Snapdragon 855 chip on your phone and running clean Android software is the secret to success. Sony Xperia 1 can quickly switch applications and respond to input immediately. In my tests, everyday performance was never a problem, although 6GB of memory might not look much in 619.

Image Quality

On a more positive side, the Sony Xperia 1 can take beautiful photos - especially when it's on the right hand side. The images look neutral, with no enhancers or AI gimmicks trying to make them "better" by increasing the contrast and saturation beyond the actual level. The 2x telephoto camera is ideal for portraits. The wide-angle camera captures epic shots from a dramatic perspective with real-time distortion correction (if enabled). When shooting close-ups, eye tracking AF is convenient even when you are on a pet or wearing a subject. By adjusting the focus and exposure of each image, the burst mode helps you capture the moment instantly. All in all, Sony is equipped with many camera tools in the Xperia 1.

Sound Quality

As I pointed out at the outset, the Sony Xperia 1 has no audio jack, but it comes with a dongle that can be used to connect a pair of favorite wired headsets. My evaluation unit is also equipped with wired in-ear headphones. It has a 3.5mm connector instead of a USB-C connector, so it can be used with other gadgets like your laptop. The sound quality is much higher than average and there is enough bass.

Like many Sony phones in the past, the Xperia 1 provides stereo through its speakers. One of the drives is a headset and the other is a bottom-emitting speaker. The sound is very loud, the sound is high and the sound is well reproduced, and the left and right channels are well balanced. In terms of shortcomings, there is no bass at all. I know that you won't have much impact on the low frequency of your smartphone, but both the iPhone XS and the Galaxy S10 can provide more bass from the speakers.

Battery Life

On paper, the Xperia 1's built-in 3300mAh battery is one of the smallest batteries you find on high-end Android phones. In contrast, the OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a 4000mAh battery, and the Galaxy S10 + internal battery weighs 4100mAh. But the truth is this: the actual battery life I got from Xperia 1 is also good. It's not very good either, but I can't say that Xperia 1 is disappointing in this department. On a busy day, I will effectively use about 6 hours, including about 2 hours of game time, 1 hour of web browsing, 2 hours of YouTube and 1 hour of Spotify streaming.
