One of the greatest city planners of ancient times, Hippodamus of Miletus, had designed the city before its construction began in the year 407 BC. Soon after its construction, it became an important seafaring and trading centre of the Eastern Mediterranean region. In the years that followed, much of its glory was lost owing to the rule of different empires at various times in history. ...
... It was occupied for a long time by Italy but eventually came under the rule of Greece in the mid-20th century.
During your Rhodes holidays, you'll also get to visit the Old Town, which is among Europe's largest medieval towns. An individual who visits this town gets to explore 24 centuries of history within its walls. One of its highlights is the Palace of the Grand Master, which was originally a Byzantine fortress constructed during the 7th century. It was converted into the residence of the Grand Master by the Knights of the Order of Saint John. Today it functions as a museum. One of Europe's best-preserved medieval streets called 'Street of the Knights' is also located in the Old Town.
As you get outside the Old Town during your holidays to Rhodes, you'll get the chance to explore the 'New City'. It was designed by the Italian architect called Florestano di Fausto and comprises of some magnificent neo-classical, Venetian, and modern buildings. You'll also be delighted to take a walk around Mandraki, which is a small marina with an entrance that has Rhodian deer statues on top of the pillars. During your visit to this wonderful marina, you can also explore an aquarium that houses many of the species found in the Aegean Sea.
Rodini Park is a fascinating place worth exploring on the other side of the city. It delights visitors with streams and paths that run through the pine, cypress, and maple trees as well as the oleander bushes. It is believed to be the place of the 'School of Rhetoric', which was attended by famous Romans and Greeks, such as Brutus, Julius Caesar, and Marc Anthony. Upon visiting Saint Stefanos Hill, you'll find many historical attractions. The most famous among them is Acropolis, which was an important centre of recreation, worship, and education in ancient times. Also found on this hill are the remains of the Temple of Apollo.
