In the year 1923, the newly formed Republic of Turkey was recognised internationally. Turkey remained neutral during the Second World War, except for the closing stages when it sided with the Allies. The first multi-party elections were held in the year 1946. The liberalisation of the nation's economy in the late 20th century brought strong economic growth and political stability in the country.
