In the centuries that followed, many powerful kingdoms established their rule in Anatolia, such as the Phrygians and Cimmerians.

Following the death of Alexander in the year 323 BC, Anatolia became a part of the Roman republic by 1st century BC. In the mid-15th century, the Ottomans completely conquered the Byzantine Empire by establishing their rule over Constantinople. During their rule, the city was named Istanbul. The Turkish War of Independence and the formal abolishing of the monarchy by the Turkish Parliament led to the end of Ottoman rule. In the year 1923, the newly formed Republic of Turkey was recognised internationally. Turkey remained neutral during the Second World War, except for the closing stages when it sided with the Allies.
