Hair Removal Practices: From Ancient Times To Today

Contrary to popular belief, the practice of removing hair has been around for thousands of years. During ancient times, men and women in the Egyptian, Roman and Indian cultures were already practicing hair removal methods similar to those used today.
Remarkably, ancient cultures used tools such as sharp stones and seashells to remove their unwanted hair. Here is a brief overview of hair removal techniques of several ancient cultures.
The Egyptians
In ancient Egypt, men and women removed their head hair and even considered pubic hair as a sign of being uncivilized. Aside from this fact, body hair was widely rejected in ancient Egypt because of the following reasons:

Eliminating lice and mites.
Hair was correlated with the lower-class society in ancient Egypt.
Relief from the scorching Egyptian heat.

Being hairless for the Egyptians is not just a matter of preference, but rather, a requirement. It was highly important for Egyptian priests to remove their eyebrows and eyelashes. In addition, even pharaohs were buried together with their jewel-encrusted razors. Ancient Egyptians believed that such hair removal tools could help them stay hair-free in the afterlife.
When it comes to hair removal methods, Egyptians were also considered to be pioneers. The Egyptians used a sugar-based mixture (beeswax and oils) to remove unwanted hair. With the use of copper and gold razors, shaving was also another common hair removal.
The Romans
Just like the Egyptians, the ancient Romans classified societal status based on body hair. However, the Romans were not very as fixated on removing unwanted body hair as the ancient Egyptians. In fact, Roman slaves and the other members of the lower class maintained beards, which came in and out of style numerous times during the existence of the Roman Empire.
The most common hair removal methods used by the ancient Romans include the following:

Shaving with the use of iron razors.
Plucking using tweezers.
Using depilatory creams and pastes.

Both men and women used iron razors. However, using a razor was less popular because of risk of cuts and wounds. The second most prevalent style was plucking with the use of tweezers. Depilatory creams and waxes were also used during the ancient Roman times.
The 20th and 21st Centuries
In the 20th century, the majority of men and women were still using the old hair removal methods in their regular beauty care routines. From shaving, plucking, tweezing, waxing, threading or depilatory, removing unwanted body hair was a common practice for men and women. However, new trends in the 21st century have created new tendencies to keep body hair, as it has become more socially acceptable for both men and women.
Today, removing unwanted body hair is a matter of personal choice and preference for both men and women, with many possibilities to achieve a hairless look, and also the freedom to keep one’s natural body hair. Some latest trends and innovative technologies in hair removal include the following:
For permanent results: Galvanic Electrolysis
For temporary or reduction results:

Waxing
Shaving
Laser

Due to recent advances in technology, there is new and effective permanent hair removal solution for both men and women.
