Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
The imposing Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world, built by Oman’s current ruler Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said and opened in 2001 to mark 30 years of the ruler’s reign. This beautiful landmark was constructed with modern Islamic architecture and sculpted with Indian sandstone, and also features one of the world’s largest chandeliers, colourful mosaic patterns, glistening chandeliers and intricate carvings, as well as traditional Omani style ceilings.

Al Alam Palace
This ceremonial palace is not open to the public, but it’s definitely still worth admiring from the stunning gates and makes for some amazing backdrop photos, especially in the evenings when the building becomes illuminated. Set amongst a range of pristine gardens and courtyards, Sultan’s Palace dates back over 200 years and was rebuilt into a royal residence in 1972, with a distinct façade of blue, white and gold.

Mutrah Fort
Set on a rocky outcrop, Mutrah Fort dates back to the 1580s during the city’s Portuguese rule. This military structure comprises of circular towers, sturdy walls, distinct architectural designs and historic weaponry, and you can climb the steps of the monument to witness stunning vistas of the Gulf of Oman. Mutrah Fort recently reopened to the public after years of restoration, allowing you to take advantage of more access to one of the most captivating structures in Muscat.

Al Jalali Fort
Similar to Muttrah Fort, Al Jalali Fort was built during Oman’s Portuguese reign, and it’s one of the most famous landmarks in Muscat with incredible ancient architecture reflecting the region’s rich history. Once a prison, Al Jalali Fort is now a private museum space available only to dignitaries, so visitors can only view this castle-like building from the outside. The historic fortress offers some beautiful vistas of the harbour, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Royal Opera House
The majestic Royal Opera House is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. This masterpiece of a building is one of Oman’s most important performing arts centres, and boasts modern architecture that was inspired by the grandeur style of Omani palaces, with an impressive façade of white stone and arches. The Royal Opera House also has an impressive interior with decorated walls and ceilings, grand red carpets and crystal chandeliers.
