Some of the common symptoms which are associated with eye irritation are itching, redness, soreness, swelling, tearing, burning, pain, fatigue etc. It can also come along with a blurred vision. In such situation, the patient often feels as if there is a speck in his eyes. These problems can be caused by a number of reasons and in order to take proper care of it, you need to indentify the actual reason behind it. In this post, I will be listing a few common reasons which are responsible for such scenarios. So, let’s get started.

Five Reasons For Eye Irritation And Itching That You Need To Ponder About!

As I mentioned earlier, there can be a host of conditions which may lead to eye irritation. You must know, out of these reasons, a few of them require immediate consultation with an ophthalmologist while some can go away with time without requiring any medical treatment.

But if you ever happen to suffer from a condition of eye irritation, you must refrain yourself from rubbing your eyes or using eye makeup etc. and you must also protect them from dust. Below I am listing five primarily observed eye irritation causes along with some precautionary or curative measures that you can take to keep them in better condition. Let’s take a look at them:

1. Foreign Particles in Eyes:

The first reason can be the invasion of foreign particles in eyes. If something like a dust particle or eye makeup has gone in your eyes, it can cause an eye irritation. In such a case, you must wash it off properly with cold tap water without rubbing your eyes. This can definitely give you some relief and should solve the problem.

2. Dry Eye Syndrome:

This syndrome can be caused by constant computer use without blinking eyes, hormonal changes, use of contact lenses or even dry atmospheric conditions. It can also be caused by certain medicines and cigarette smoke which might lead to a situation where the tear glands fail to produce enough amount or quality of tear drops to keep the optimum level of moisture in the eyes. Thus you get the dry eye syndrome.
This syndrome can also cause eye irritation and if not treated properly, it may also result in blurred vision and infections. In such a situation, you should not neglect the condition and just visit an ophthalmologist, who may prescribe you a suitable eye lubricating drop, gel or ointment to maintain the correct moisture level in your eyes. Although, this syndrome is not completely curable but it can surely be dealt with using external lubrication or by surgical methods.

3. Infections and Allergies:

Infection and allergies can also cause eye irritation and may very often make the white portion of your eyes (sclera) look red. In case if you have the other symptoms of eye irritation as well, it’s possible that you might have caught an infection known as conjunctivitis. Although, allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious, the viral conjunctivitis is quite contagious. In such a scenario, you should visit your family doctor or an ophthalmologist to get it treated fast. He may prescribe you a suitable eye drop along with some oral medications.

Similarly, eye irritation can also be caused by allergies also. A lot of people have foreign particles allergy, smoke allergy or seasonal allergies. In such cases as well the eyes become red. If you are suffering from this, you must pay attention to the pattern of your disease and try to find out what you are allergic to. This can help you to treat the problem better.

4. Sub-conjunctival Hemorrhage:

The next cause is sub-conjunctival hemorrhage. It is a condition caused by the broken blood vessels beneath the tissue covering the sclera. This will make the eyes look red and really frightening at times. Although, in general, it is not harmful and often does not cause any discomfort or vision related problems, but to be on the safer side, in such cases, you must consult an eye doctor.

5. Injuries:

Last common issue is injuries to eyes. For this reason they can become red, swollen and painful. These injuries to eyes sometime can be very dangerous and require an immediate consultation with your ophthalmologist. You must keep in mind that these injuries may not only result in visible ailments but they can also cause some internal damages. In case the injury is major, you must consult an eye doctor immediately to know the impact and get treated timely to avoid permanent vision loss or any other complications.
