What does your child love to do in summer breaks or in free time? What are his/her hobbies or favourite activities that keep him/her involved? We can bet that hardly 30% of you will say reading or art. As technology has evolved and kids have got more options to keep themselves busy, they have become more interested in the virtual world rather than the real one. They don’t go to playgrounds anymore, don’t play outdoor games and reading is nowhere in the scene. Honestly, reading books other than academic ones is crucial for children for their mental growth. They learn about the real world, extend their vision and understand different perspectives to look at the things. Of course, one obvious benefit is academic growth and cognitive development. However, the big question is how to make the kids read more. We know that achieving this is not a walk in the park. So, we have listed 5 ways to make your ward an avid reader. Have a look:

Parent involvement is of utmost importance to develop an interest in kids. Amidst hectic schedule and busy life, when you spare a few hours for them and enjoy different activities with them, they tend to have fun too as they would love to spend time with you. Seeing you being a part of something will make them intrigued and they will follow your footsteps. Use voice modulations and creative techniques to read them stories.

When kids are surrounded by toys, mobile phones and television, they will hardly see books amidst all the hustle and bustle. However, creating a cosy nook which is peaceful and belong to them completely will be a motivating step. This will be the place that they can call their own, have all the books they are interested in and away from other electric devices.

Most of the kids' books have movies based on them. When they will have a visual presentation of the story that they have just finished reading and can identify the famous characters, this will motivate them to read other similar books too. So, show them the movies based on the popular books that they are reading and discuss the story with them.

Try to make reading fun by using puppets, e-reading, video and audio stories or group reading. We know that taking out time for these activities may not be possible for you all the time but you can do it on weekends or get your kid enrolled in summer camps that organize reading sessions for children.

Last, do not force any particular genre on your kid. Give them the freedom to explore their interest and pick the books that they want to read. Take them to a bookstore and help them find something that sounds exciting and interesting to them and not you.

We know that academic results have their own importance and you want your kids to focus more on studies. And as the Rajasthan 5th class result 2019 is announced, you want your ward to focus more on his/her lessons. However, you also need to remember that there are other areas too that are significant for the overall development of your kid and reading is one of them. So, take efforts to hone the reading skills of your kid and you will witness positive outcomes soon.
